“We should go,” Ariella said. “We outran the demons, but they won’t stop searching until they find us.”

We started the long trek through the forest. Fifteen minutes into it, I grew tired of how slow it was going. They told me where they had hidden the car; another shifted into my normal black wolf and raced there.

A handful of times, I had to take a detour to avoid the demons searching the forest, but I found the car a lot quicker than we would have if coming on human legs. I shifted back, put on clothes, and drove down the road to the closest point where the others could get to me.

They were beyond the tree line, hiding and waiting for me.

Once Ariella was in the passenger seat, and Thierry and Doreen in the backseat, I stepped on it.

“I’m still amazed Paimon didn’t kill you right away,” Thierry said, breaking the silence in the truck.

“About that.” I told them what Paimon had planned on doing with me, and that he was after the dragon. “I listened to half a conversation, but I believe he plans to find the dragon and use his magic to power his own.”

“With a power like that, he might be too strong for any of us,” Ariella observed.

Doreen inhaled deeply. “We can’t let him get the dragon.”

“My thoughts exactly,” I said. “The good news is that I heard where the hunting party is right now.”

“You want to go after them?” Ariella asked.

“I want to go after the dragon.”

“Wait.” Doreen raised a finger. “You want to kill the dragon?”

I pressed my lips tight. “I … No, I don’t. I want to protect it or put it to sleep, but if it comes between that and letting Paimon get his hands on him, then yes, I will kill the dragon.”

“Dragons aren’t easy to kill,” Thierry said.

I looked at him through the rearview mirror. “I know that, and that’s why I need your help.”

Doreen and Thierry exchanged a look.

“Shane, what you’re planning makes sense, but I think there’s one more pressing thing to do,” Doreen said. “We now know where Paimon is hiding, and because of that, he’ll certainly move and fast. We need to warn the demon hunters and get ready for an attackright now.”

I understood her point, but … “By the time the demon hunters get there, he’ll have already moved.”

“We’ll take those chances,” Thierry said.

“You want to go back?” I asked.

Both of them nodded. We spoke little while I drove to the nearest town and left them at a rental car place.

When I stopped the car in front of the store, Doreen looked at me. “Are you sure you don’t want to come with us? You wanted to have your shot at Paimon.”

I shook my head. I was certain they would find the mansion empty by the time their army got there. Paimon would be in hiding, and the only way to stop him, even if only temporarily, was to catch that dragon. “No, I’ll stay.”

Doreen nodded. “Thank you for your help.”

“Right,” Thierry agreed. “If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have known where Paimon was. Now we at least have a hot lead.”

I nodded. “Thank you for letting me tag along.”

Doreen patted my shoulder before exiting the car. Thierry offered me an army salute and followed her. Ariella and I watched as the two of them entered the rental car place and talked to a sales associate.

Ariella looked at me. “Are we going to catch a dragon now?”

A lopsided grin spread through my lips. “We sure are.”
