I parkedbeside a silver sedan outside a fast-food restaurant, and Ariella and I got out of the Jeep.

She stared at the empty car. “This is their car?”

“I believe so.” I looked to the restaurant’s door. “Let’s go see if—”

The door opened and Evelyn and Ash walked out, carrying a paper bag with their lunches.

Evelyn’s eyes widened at the fallen angel beside me. “Ariella?”

“Evelyn?” Ariella said, matching Evelyn’s disbelief.

“Wait, you two know each other?” I asked, confused.

The girls smiled at each other.

“Yeah, Ariella came to my shop over a year ago, I think,” Evelyn said. “She had been attacked by some demons and was in pretty bad shape.”

Ariella nodded. “She helped me once when I got injured.”

“Right. It was right when I met Ash too.” She gestured to her boyfriend. “Ash this is Ariella, Ariella, this is Ash.”

The two of them shook hands. “I’ve heard about you,” Ash said. “Evie didn’t know much about you, but she said you were one badass angel.”

Ariella rolled her eyes and grimaced. “If I was really badass, I would have already caught the demons who stole my wings.”

Evelyn shook her head. “You are badass. Just … since the new king took over the underworld, things have been crazy. There are more demons topside, and also a lot of them in complete hiding. But I believe in you. You’ll find your wings.”

Ariella waved her hand. “Okay, but that’s not why we are here.”

“Right,” Ash said, facing me. “What are you two doing here?”

I looked around, to see if there were any bystanders. We were standing between our two cars, in front of an old fast-food restaurant, in a town that didn’t seem to have a lot of movement, if any at all. Still, I wanted to be sure.

“The group you met at the gas station? That’s Paimon’s demons coming after the dragon.”

Evelyn frowned. “So now Paimon is after the dragon?” I nodded and explained to them why. Evelyn gasped. “We need to help this dragon ASAP!”

I would do my best to help Evelyn and the dragon, to get him away from here and Paimon somehow, but if we sent the dragon across the ocean and Paimon followed him … I didn’t see many options other than killing the dragon. But I didn’t say that to Evelyn. If I did, she wouldn’t let me tag along.

I nodded. “Exactly. We came to protect the dragon from them.”

“Great.” Evelyn opened their car’s door. “Then we stick together. It’ll be easier to fight the demons if it comes to that.”

After some logistics, we agreed it was better if we all took the Jeep, since it was sturdier than the sedan, and could probably go off-road. Ariella and I bought us lunch, and the four of us resumed our trip.

This time, though, we had Evelyn: She could sense dragon magic and she told me which direction to go.

We drovenortheast for a couple of hours, then we moved straight north. Soon, we would be driving into Canada.

At some point, I rested my head back and napped. When I woke up, my head was on Roman’s shoulder and my hand on his over my lap.

I quickly stiffened and straightened, pulling my hand from his.
