Roman smiled at me. “Sleep well?”

“Yeah,” I mumbled. “Sorry for leaning on you.”

He frowned. “Sorry? Why? I’m your mate, Raika. You don’t need to apologize for that.” He patted his shoulder. “If you want, this spot is now available.”

“I’m good,” I said quickly.

I picked up my phone and opened up the internet browser. I didn’t have any social media, and other than books, no real interests—not that I could remember. There wasn’t much for me to do, other than searching about memory loss, which I already had done many, many times.

Finally, in the middle of the afternoon, Kaz said, “We’re close.”

Not long after that, we drove by a farm on fire.

“This can’t be a coincidence,” Ivy observed.

“No, it can’t,” Kaz agreed.

He drove onto the farm’s entry road and stopped the car a safe distance from the fire. We ran toward the handful of people working together to save the cattle and everything else around it.

“What happened?” Ivy asked.

Feeling like I couldn’t just stand there and watch as they desperately tried to save their farm, I sprang into action. I joined an older woman as she tried to usher the cows to go through a gate and into a small pen, away from the burning field. In the distance, a truck with a water tank drove beside the fire, sprinkling water.

A man with graying hair turned to us. “I-I don’t know. I couldn’t say. Because … it sounds crazy.”

“Was it a dragon?” Kaz went right for the jugular.

The man’s face paled. “Yes, it was. How do you know?”

“Where did the dragon go?” Ivy asked.

The man pointed to the horizon, beyond his farm and field, where a forest extended before a bulky mountain.

A spark of fire burst from the middle of the field, billowing to the sky. It was advancing fast.

“Did you call 911 ?” I asked.

The man nodded. “The fire station is a little ways from here. It’ll take them a while to get here.” He pointed to the truck watering the field. “That’s why I’ve got my son doing what we can.”

That wouldn’t be enough. In a few minutes, this fire would consume everything around it.

I turned to Ivy. ”Is there anything you can do? Use your magic to contain the fire? Snuff it out?”

Ivy frowned and shook her head. “Use my magic in front of humans?”

“They already saw a dragon!” I snapped. “Will it be worse if they see some magic?”

Ivy blinked. “No, I supposed not.” She exhaled a long breath. “I’m not sure this will work, though.”

“Just … try it. Please.”

She nodded. “Sir, you and your family should back away a little.”

He looked confused. “B-but we need to get the cattle out, and my son needs to contain the fire.”

I held the man’s arm and pulled him back gently. “Sir, trust us. We’ll help you.” At least, I hoped we would.

Numb, the man nodded and let me take him back. He called his family, and he also called his son’s phone and told him to back out a little.
