The sun edged closer to the horizon, making the gray day even darker, and it was taking too damn long.

I handed my bag to Ash. “I’ll scout ahead.”

“Don’t eng—“

“I won’t,” I said, cutting Ariella off. “I’ll see if I can spot the demons or the dragon. I’ll come back soon.”

I let them walk past me while I took my clothes off. I threw them at Asher’s back and shifted. It felt good to be in my black wolf’s skin and in control. In this form, there was no bloodlust.

I raced past my friends, zooming through the trees and up the mountain. I slowed down when the trees thinned and I could see the mountain’s base below.

And something unexpected caught my attention. A narrow trail led around the side of the mountain. A few wisps of smoke rose to the sky. The mountain had some residents.

I ignored those—as long as they didn't want the dragon, I didn’t care about them—and continued along the mountain’s base.

I looked up and saw figures bobbing up and down the mountainside. I could see … four? Even with my wolf sight, I couldn’t see them well.

A roar sounded and the dark green dragon appeared in the sky.

On instinct, I lowered myself to the ground and watched in awe as the beautiful creature flapped his humongous wings and dove toward the mountain.

Then, he disappeared into the mountain’s side.

The group of demons sped up, going toward the cave the dragon had flown into.

Shit, they were too far ahead.

I raced back to my friends. Thankfully, they had sped up and were close by. I shifted back. “We’ve gotta go,” I said as Ash threw me my clothes back. I shoved on the pants and shoes, and ran while still putting my shirt back on.

“What happened?” Evelyn asked, trying to keep up with me.

“The dragon flew inside the mountain, and the demons are right at the entrance,” I told them.

“Shit,” Ash muttered.

“If you can run faster, then go!” Ariella urged.

I could run faster, but … “If I arrive alone to fight four demons, it will get me nowhere. We go together.”

“They probably won’t kill the dragon right away,” Evelyn said. “If Paimon wants the dragon to absorb his powers, then the dragon needs to be alive.”

“Right,” I said.

We emerged through the trees and ran up the mountain. Time seemed to slow down as we made our way through the loose rocks, dry vegetation, and a few dragon scales. The dark gray clouds rumbled above us.

Shit. All we needed was to get rained on right now.

A faint scent hit my nostrils and I faltered.

Jasmine. I looked around. Was there jasmine growing around here? I couldn’t see them. With my sense of smell, they could be on the other side of the mountain and the wind brought it over.

I shook my head.

The huge cave opening came into view, giving us renewed energy, and we sprinted forward.

We emerged inside a long, dark tunnel, and the first thing I noticed was the jasmine scent was stronger here. I frowned. I didn’t understand anything about flowers … did jasmine grow inside mountains? That couldn’t be.

Or I was going crazy.
