“Who were the other two in the pictures? The girl and the boy?”

It broke my heart that she had to ask about them. “My siblings, Minsi and Tyren.”

Raika put a hand over her chest. “I—”

The prison door opened and someone marched in.

A different goblin, taller than the other three, but just as slim. He had an even more rugged face, a big, bald head, and thick eyebrows. He stared with the authority only a leader had.

“Ye sayin' ye can slay the dragon, uh?” he asked, his voice deep.

I puffed out my chest as best as I could in this tiny cell. “Yes, we can.”

Raika glared at me. I would say anything this guy wanted to hear as long as it took us out of here.

“Why do ye want to slay the dragon?”

“There’s an evil higher demon who wants to kill the dragon and absorbs his powers, so he’ll grow stronger.”

The goblin snorted. “All demons are evil.”

“That’s not true!” Raika stood in the cell, the top of her head half an inch from the top wooden beams.

The goblin spat on the ground and repeated, “All demons are evil.”

“Regardless,” I said, my voice louder. I threw Raika a look that said please-let-me-handle-this-one. If she really was my Raika, she would know what I meant. “This demon needs to be stopped.” Raika groaned and turned her back to us. “If he grows more powerful, he’ll try to take back the underworld.”

The goblin pursed his lips. “Maybe that isn’t a bad idea.”

I wasn’t expecting that. “Why?”

His dark eyes fixed on mine, and he seemed to consider if he should tell me or not. “We live at the base of the mountain, and now that demons aren’t welcomed in the underworld anymore, they come crawling into our village and claim our mountain. We wouldn’t care if they didn’t destroy our flowers or attack our people.”

The wheels in my brain turned fast. “I’m an honorary member of DuMoir Castle.”

“Those pompous vampires have a werewolf in their midst?”

“Wolf shifter, and yes, they do.” And also several witches and an angel. Soon, it would be the whole zoo in there. “I can talk to Lord Drake. He’s dedicated to keeping the peace and helping supernaturals. If I ask, I’m sure he’ll send a team of vampires and they will deal with the demons for you.”

The goblin narrowed his eyes. “A vampire would never care for goblins.”

“Lord Drake is different. I assure you, he’ll listen to me and he’ll help.”

All of a sudden, the prison door opened and the goblin with a gold hoop rushed in.

“What is it, Etyx?”

“Sloz, I know ye didn’t want to be disturbed, but … it’s Dalk.”

Without sparing another look at us, Sloz ran out of the prison. Etyx went after him.

I watched as the door closed, and Raika and I were left alone in the prison as if we hadn’t been negotiating a way out of here. I turned to talk to Raika about it and found her fuming at me.

“What the hell was that?”

“What?”

“An evil higher demon? Are you kidding me?”
