“Technically, yes,” Thea said.

“I think so,” Almae said.

“But I don’t know any curse-breaking spells,” Lavinia said.

Almae reached for her and touched her arm. “I know an easy one. I can help you with it.”

I looked at them expectantly. “So?”

Lavinia shrugged. “We can try, but I think I won’t take all of her blood in case it doesn’t work. We might need her.”

Dot was one of the last Nightmist witches alive. Her coven had terrorized Minsi, made a deal with Conri, attacked my pack, brought the demons who killed my mother into the pack lands. They had also tortured Shane for six months and cursed him.

I was past the point of caring. “She made it clear she won’t help either way. If you need to kill her, go ahead.”

“Ready?” Thea asked. We nodded. She lowered the wall and Dot growled at us, looking more insane by the seconds. The witch was starting to lose it. “In three, two … one.” Thea broke the circle.

With her vampire speed, Lavinia rushed to Dot. The witch didn’t even see it happening. One second, Lavinia was beside Killian. The next, she was holding Dot against her, her mouth closed around Dot’s neck. A thin trail of blood slid down the witch’s dark skin.

With a gasp, Lavinia let go of Dot. Her body fell on the floor with a heavy thud. I could still hear her heart beating slowly, but still there.

Lavinia closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I can feel it. Her magic.”

Almae stood by her side. “Call on that magic, hold on to it. Now look at Shane.” Lavinia followed the instructions. “Think about his curse. To turn into the Shadow Wolf at every full moon, until it’s all he knows and becomes it.” Almae placed her hands over Lavinia’s. “Now, let me guide you.”

Almae closed her eyes, and together, the two of them stood still, their hands touching and out toward Shane. He seemed oblivious to all happening on this side of the bedroom, as he continued running and racing toward the bars, trying to break them.

I bit my pinkie nail, waiting, waiting, waiting. A couple of minutes passed and nothing happened. I wanted to ask what was going on, but I was afraid of disrupting their spell.

Finally, Shane stopped.

“Keep going,” Almae whispered.

His red eyes faded, his fur started receding, and he let out a howl. Then he twisted into himself, as if it was hurting. He knelt on the floor as the Shadow Wolf features disappeared.

A sob rose to my throat. It was working. It was working!

Shane’s howl turned into a growl, then a gasp.

Sweat beading his skin, he lifted his head and stared at us. “What’s going on?”

My heart hammering in my chest, I approached the bars. “Shane, Dot put a curse on me.”

“She did WHAT?” he growled, his chest moved fast, but …

“No Shadow Wolf,” I whispered. Tears brimmed in my eyes.

He realized what I did. His eyes rounded. “You lied. You thought I would turn into the Shadow Wolf.” He looked down at his arms. “But … I’m still me. I was fucking pissed a second ago, but I’m still me.”

A click sounded from the door in the center of the bars. The magic on it was gone and I opened it. I knew everyone behind me was exiting the room, carrying Dot with them, but I barely paid them any attention.

I stepped past the bars. Shane pushed to his feet and came to me. We collided, his naked body flushed against mine, his arms around my waist, and his head on my hair and neck.

“It’s gone,” I whispered.

“Yes, I can’t feel it anymore,” he whispered back. “Thank you.”

“You don’t need to thank me.”
