“They’re the bastards you used to work for,” TJ said. It wasn’t a question.

“I didn’t—”

“Your father worked for them.”

“And we were forced to,” Rhys said.

I never wanted to admit that. I’d only done what I’d had to do to keep my brothers safe.

“And it’s even more personal now.” Rhys looked at me.

TJ would have to know if he was going to help us keep Jacob safe. “Trey took advantage of Jacob, basically holding him prisoner until Rogue helped him escape. That’s why he’s here.”

“Fuck.”

“Yeah,” Rhys said.

“We need to double down on keeping him with us. If Brandon was working with his family, Trey likely has access to our location.”

The sound of a vehicle had us all turning. It was a truck towing a horse trailer.

“Shit. I didn’t think they’d get here so early.”

“Who is it?” Rhys asked.

“The guy who sold me a horse for Jacob.”

“You bought Jacob his own horse?”

“He’s always wanted one, and I have to do something with all the fucking money X is paying me.”

“Right, because you’d never just buy shit for yourself.”

TJ snorted. “Are you still going to try to pretend you aren’t in love with him?”

“What?”

“You’re in love with Jacob.”

“Yeah, I know.”

Rhys stumbled, and TJ was hit with a laughing fit.

“So you’ve changed your mind about keeping him?” Rhys asked when he’d composed himself.

“I intend to convince him to stay with me.”

“By bribing him with a horse?”

“Whatever it takes.”

“Have you tried just telling him how you feel?”

TJ huffed. “Like it’s that simple.”

Rhys rolled his eyes. “Sometimes it can be. I think it will be with Jacob.”

“I’m going to tell him, okay.”
