“And you’re also giving him a horse,” my brother confirmed.

“Yes. He deserves it. He’s a natural rider.”

TJ made a strangled sound. “I don’t need that much info.”

I flipped him off. “Drive the fucking truck.” I gestured toward the vehicle he and Rhys had used. “I can’t keep this guy waiting.”

Rhys automatically went to my truck as I’d known he would. He and TJ seemed to be fighting less, but I didn’t think he would ride with the guy voluntarily.

I drove as fast as I could without putting us in major danger. Rhys clung to the grab handle the whole time.

“Jesus, you didn’t drive that fast in the marines.”

“The hell I didn’t. You never rode with me.”

“Thank God. Remind me not to do it again.”

We pulled up at the barn at the same time as the man with the trailer. I kept small talk to a minimum, and we coaxed the gorgeous mare out of the trailer and into the barn.

“She’s fucking perfect,” Rhys said when her former owner had left.

“Did you doubt my ability to pick out a horse for my man?”

“You’re ready to claim him now?”

“I have been—”

Rhys shook his head. “You were in protector mode, but you weren’t ready to admit what you actually felt.”

“I hate when you’re right.”

“You should get over that because it’s going to keep happening.”

“So you’re right about TJ?”

Rhys froze with his hand on the new horse’s flank. “Yes. Absolutely.”

“He’s evil?”

“He’s a killer, and he doesn’t belong here.”

I grinned behind my brother’s back, but I didn’t say anything else. “Do you mind hanging out to make sure Daisy’s happy here while I go get Jacob?”

Rhys rolled his eyes. “Go get your boyfriend and spoil him like you’ve been dying to.”

“I will. Don’t let your guard down. I wish this was really over, but…”

“I know. I got it.”

After Grant left, I set the bread dough in a bowl to rise and started cleaning up the kitchen. “I’m going up to my room for a while.”

Rogue frowned, studying me for a moment. “Are you okay, like, really? What happened with Evan, that had to be—”

“I’m fine. I just hope the FBI really will get him help.”
