He chuckled, unamused by my threat.

My arms were growing weary. I hadn’t fought and wielded this much magic yet, and I could not be certain how much longer I would manage without some sort of rest. However, I had no other choice. Right now, I needed to move us away quickly before Bash dug himself from beneath the rubble and returned for me. I would have to escape these pirates the second I could, but they seemed like the lesser of two evils at the moment.

When the navigator refused to back down, I closed my eyes and raised my head toward the heavens, praying for some sort of power I had yet to tap into to come to me now.

I opened my eyes as a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, blasting the deck of Bash’s ship once more. Wrong ship, I muttered internally.

I lifted my hand, and another streak of lightning darted from the sky, this time hitting my palm squarely in the center, turning my body into a blazing inferno of blue crackling energy. I eyed the man before me, who trembled as he tried to stand his ground.

“I warned you,” I said, and volleyed a blast of power his way. It knocked him off his feet, and he went flying against the side of the ship’s railing.

I grabbed the wheel and yanked it to the right as hard as I could, away from Bash’s airship, his men, and more importantly, him.

A group of men came rushing up the stairs, but the energy from the lightning charge was still clearly visible in and around my body. “Stay back. I do not wish you harm. I only need to get to safety. Please.”

A loud, deep, guttural laugh came from right below us on the main deck. I kept an eye on the men who had rushed toward me, but they, too, paused and turned to face where the sound was coming from.

Standing there on the main deck of the ship was the tall, older man from the Hall of Knowledge: Thomas, the attendant.

“What?” I nearly sputtered the word, attempting to form a coherent thought and say something.

“Taking over a damned pirate ship in the middle of a battle with the bastard Bash himself.” Thomas chuckled again and put his hands on his hips. “I wouldn’t expect anything less from my daughter.”
