“I thought Violet would follow in her footsteps. When she didn’t, I took matters into my own hands. We made Varium safe for Evelyn. For any magic caster who fled. Casters have been hunted for so long now, that we don’t like outsiders coming our way. Not ever. But sometimes, perhaps, I take things too far, and for my encouragement of an attack, again, you have our apologies.”

I stiffened. Apologies did not bring ships back, nor men lost for the mere reason of assumption. However, now was not the time to debate such things.

“It’s in the past now, “I said, lifting my bottle. “Let’s let it lie, shall we?”

Bruno bowed his head and took another sip.

“That’s it then.” Evelyn’s voice rose over the chattering tone the three women had been keeping. Bruno immediately leapt to his feet, marching toward his ward and breaking from the camaraderie we’d been easing him into. “We have a little adventure to go on.”

He paused, as we all did, realizing Evelyn wasn’t annoyed as she had been in her initial outcry.

An unease had settled into my gut that would be hard to ignore. And as I observed the woman in the mask of power before me, the feeling intertwined itself further.

Ainsley’s back was to me, but Jo’s wary gaze only confirmed my own suspicions even further.

Evelyn Zhou was not to be trusted. Not for a moment. And whatever adventure she had planned, would certainly not end with simply good tidings.
