Evelyn knew how to command a room, or the deck of a ship in this instance.

Years inside Rookhallow Proper had guided me in separating those that were good at playing performances, from those that would get you into trouble with their dimness.

This woman would have been the forever-beloved star of the show.

“Ainsley, you and the captain will join us, and Jo, of course. We will be departing for the city at once.” She pivoted, not considering for a moment that her order wouldn’t be accepted by Killian.

“I believe we would feel more comfortable in an unknown place surrounded by a few others we trust,” Killian said as he finished his trek across the deck to stand at my side.

Jackson flanked me at the other. It took every ounce of composed dignity I had within me not to straighten my shoulders and seethe at the way they made it seem as though I needed their masculine protection.

I shook my head slightly, which Evelyn perceived in an instant.

She laughed, fluttering her fingertips to her lips with an added bit of dramatic flair. “Why, of course, Captain.” Then she swiveled her gaze to me. “I know what it is like to never have a moment alone as well. It can be rather daunting. Yet, it is necessary in these uncertain times. Unfortunately.” She flicked her hand toward Bruno. “A few more would be fine, yes?”

He nodded without a word.

“Perfect. Let us hurry then.” Evelyn pivoted on her heel, heading back to her own airship.

“Rek,” Killian called over his shoulder. “Jasper.” The two men walked over, obeying their captain. “Rek, you’re coming with me. Jasper, you will be in command in our absence. If anything should go amiss, get the ship to safety and be prepared for anything.”

Jasper inclined his head, giving Killian a little salute before moving toward the main deck of the ship with the remainder of the crew.

When Killian turned around again, it was my gaze he found. He was worried—it was evident in his features. Perhaps worried wasn’t the correct description, but he was certainly far from comfortable.

Bruno was the only one left at our side, waiting as Killian gathered our “contingency” crew. I was in front with Jo, followed by Rek, and then Jackson.

That should be plenty to ease Killian’s mind as to our safety. We would be evenly matched with the number of Evelyn’s crew with this lot at least.

Bruno stood behind Killian the moment he was aboard the plank, and I turned, focusing my attention on embarking upon Evelyn’s airship. She had seemed eager concerning our hopes of joining the casters, and respectful that it had been Hattie’s wishes.

I hadn’t revealed my lineage to her. Jo had remained quiet, no doubt appraising our newest ally before she would reveal anything of our history, either. I was unbelievably grateful for her, and her support. My trust would have to be earned, yet I had to admit, Jo was indeed worthy of it.

Evelyn beckoned me over as we boarded her ship. Jo was busy teasing Rek, so I walked away from the group and found a place near the water caster.

“Going into the city, this is the best view.” For a brief moment, Evelyn’s guard seemed to be down. There was a smile playing upon her lips as the ship lurched forward toward our destination. But just as quickly as she had let it down, she locked it back up tightly. “Lightning magic is rare, Ainsley.”

That tone had returned. I nodded, only once.

“Power is what protects us, you know. It is not a bad idea to align with powerful friends.” She arched a dark brow with a slight curve to her lips. “Food for thought.”

I veered away from the subject of power. The way she focused on it was a bit unnerving. “What was it that made you believe we were worthy to enter Varium?” I questioned.

Evelyn glanced my way. “You admitted you were new to your magic. It is a weakness and you revealed it willingly. You were honest. Most attempt to appear more than they are. You presented yourself exactly as you are. No pretenses.”

I blinked a few times, processing what she said. “You perceive me as weak then.” It wasn't a question, rather an observation of the meaning behind her words. “So you feel safer?”

“You needn’t be bothered by the truth. It is a compliment, dearest.” Evelyn pivoted away from me and sauntered back toward Bruno.

Given that’s where the others had gathered, I followed suit, and attempted to hide my annoyance.

The airship descended closer to the small opening that would allow us access to Varium. Thank the heavens Evelyn had left the dome above the sea. Otherwise, that would be terrifying. I could nearly feel claustrophobia setting in at the mere thought.

“Is it different than you remember?” I asked Killian.

“It’s been years, love,” he responded. “But a city underwater, yes, that’s very different.”
