Chapter13

Ithrew my cloths on, Noah doing so in half the time. We both ran out of the tent, swords drawn and ready in fighting stance as we looked to the skies.

“Whistles!” Noah shouted. “Weapons drawn! Get out here.”

Tent flaps opened and the loud screech in the distance told me what Noah and I both already knew.

The Seelie were coming.

As we waited, keeping our eyes peeled for the direction they’d come in, Noah leaned into me. “I will keep you safe, Cora. This isn’t the end.”

“I know. And I’ll do the same - whatever the cost.”

Noah squeezed my hand with one of his before we both put our blades up once more, ready and waiting.

Overhead, massive wings burst through the treetops.

“Back so soon?” A voice filled with venomous hatred yelled. “Whistle!” Noah shouted. The shrill noise sent the dragon tumbling to the earth and the rider with it.

Troops ran forward to attack, and that’s when we heard those hiding on the ground, running through the trees with force and anger.

And once again we were caught in battle with the Seelie.

I’d grown stronger in the months since our last fight with them, and my movements were fluid. Slicing through arms, wounding Seelie, I made each of them I passed weaker as other Fae behind me took care of finishing them off.

A few more screeches and I knew more dragons were coming. I ran, away from the tents to see if I could lure whoever was riding the closest one away from the others to prevent what happened before from happening again.

And then a scent hit me in the face. Right before a pair of talons did. Cinnamon.

“Noah!” I cried out.

He was over beside me almost as I finished shouting his name. “This dragon smells like the King, maybe it can lead us back to him!”

Noah nodded.

Instead of grounding this one, we wanted it to fly.

Only, we needed it to fly away and lead us to where they might be keeping the King.

We both moved closer to the beast as it landed on the ground. It’s masked rider didn’t jump off. Instead of killing blows, Noah and I circled, nipping the dragons skin here and there.

Screeching at us in annoyance it bat its wings, flying upward, just like we wanted.

We jumped, grabbing onto its legs as it tried to shake us off.

“Get back there you stupid beast,” the rider was shouting. Clearly inexperienced, the dragon didn’t listen.

But the flying was becoming more and more erratic. Noah and I clung to it as he swayed over the treetops, moving North in the direction we’d been heading.

“I’m slipping,” I said as I realized I wouldn’t be able to hold on much longer.

Noah nodded. He swung his sword upward, knocking at the dragon’s underbelly. I kicked my feet, making the beast stutter in its flying.

With enough commotion it started to the ground. Noah was flung sideways, hitting his back against a tree. I called his name but he didn’t answer.

I was pinned under the dragon, struggling to get it to move its tail. But he’d trapped me and I watched helpless as the rider got off, moving toward Noah who was still not moving after the crash into the forrest floor.

“Noah!” I screamed, begging something to wake him.
