“The job I have now is a perfect fit for me, anyway,” I said. “The company is called VisiGames. We design video games. It’s a fairly small operation. You’ve seen all the employees, and my friend Keith is the owner.”

“Video games? That sounds perfect for you.”

“It really is. For a long time, I held onto my shares of dad’s business just because I wanted to feel like I was a part of it, I guess. I knew I wasn’t interested in the restaurant business around the same time Michael did and now, I just wish that I’d sold my shares too. I’m happy designing games. It feels like it’s what I’m meant to do.”

“I get that.”

I grinned and playfully bumped my shoulder to hers. “I’m sure you do, Miss First Chair.”

The smile on her face was like a ray of sunshine. “You know I made it to the first chair in the orchestra?”

“Of course, I do. I tried to give you your space, but I have been keeping tabs on you as much as possible.”

“I’m not sure if I should be flattered or creeped out,” she teased.

I laughed. “Go with the former.”

“I’ll admit that I didn’t keep up with you.” She exhaled a deep breath. “Honestly, I’ve tried to forget all about your existence over the last few years.”

Ouch.

“Well, it’s mostly just the new job,” I said. “I’ve been busy with that for the last two years.”

“And what about your mom?” Summer asked curiously. “How is she doing?”

“Better than ever. She and Dad are separated. Soon to be divorced.”

“Oh, wow.” Her eyes went wide. “I’m sorry—”

“No,” I shook my head. “Don’t be. It’s for the best. She’s much happier now.”

Years ago, I would have been distraught at the idea of my parents divorcing. Now, I was glad that I didn’t have to deal with my dad every time I wanted to spend time with my mom.

Summer filled me in on everything else that had been going on in her life, and I realized that I missed out on a lot. She had a bigger apartment in the city, started learning Spanish, and broke her ankle a year ago. It probably wouldn’t seem like I’d missed out on anything big to most people, but Summer was one of my closest friends before we stopped talking. I knew everything about her.

At least we were finally talking again. It felt right.

I reached over and took a hold of her hand where it rested on the rock between us, intertwining our fingers. Summer tensed, making me frown, but I didn’t let go.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“What are we doing, Levi? What exactly is happening between us, because we aren’t resuming the same relationship we had before.”

“We’re finally doing what I’ve always wanted,” I said honestly. “I always thought that we’d somehow end up together eventually.”

Summer looked shocked. I cupped her cheek, running the pad of my thumb over her soft skin. Then, leaning forward, I sealed her lips in a sweet kiss.

CHAPTER11

Summer

My feelings for Levi were more powerful than ever. No matter how much my head told me to hold onto my stubborn anger, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that my heart had always been his. Of course, that didn’t mean that this relationship wasn’t complicated.

I loved my family, but they hated Levi. I didn’t see their view of him changing anytime soon.

Just for today, I decided not to think about any of that. I wanted to pretend there was nothing standing in our way and just enjoy being with him. He wasn’t the only one that had always wantedusto happen. But why couldn’t we have figured out that webothfelt this way before he became enemy number one to the Hendrix family?

We spent a long time at the cove, so that by the time we returned our bikes, it was the early evening, and I was starving. I’d accidentally skipped breakfast and lunch. Levi heard my stomach growl as we were getting back into his car and a wry smirk crossed his face.
