“I’m sorry that Harold turned out to be such a terrible person,” I said, not sure if that would be any comfort to my father or not. It certainly didn’t feel like enough.

“Listen, I don’t want you to worry about us,” my dad said earnestly. “I’ll talk to your mom and brother, and smooth things over. You just follow your heart. If you love him, why don’t you go and get him?”

I swallowed hard before throwing my arms around him and squeezing tight. “Thanks Dad.”

I knew that I should probably say something to Mom and Michael about leaving, but now that I had decided to track down Levi and tell him the depth of my feelings, I didn’t want to waste another minute.

“Can I borrow the car?” I asked, referring to the vehicle he’d rented the day we arrived on the island.

Dad handed over the keys and kissed my cheek. “Be careful.”

I just nodded and pivoted on my heel. Sprinting to the car, I headed straight to his hotel, hoping with everything I had that I wasn’t too late. I drove over the speed limit, weaving my way through traffic as much as possible to get there quickly. When I arrived, I parked the car out front, and rushed inside, ignoring all the stares as I hurried to the elevator in my formal clothing. It didn’t occur to me until I was in the elevator and jabbing at the button for his floor that I forgot my phone at the reception. I didn’t have pockets on this dress, so I’d tucked it into my violin case.

Damn it.

I wanted to talk to Levi in person, but now I couldn’t even warn him I was coming. All I could do was hope that I didn’t get the door slammed in my face.

When the elevator stopped on his floor, I went straight to his room, only knowing which one it was because he mentioned that it was the same as the street he grew up on. Twelve.

The door was ajar when I reached it, but there was a maid cart in the hallway, and I could hear a vacuum running within. Heart sinking, I pushed the door open and saw a woman in a baby blue maid’s uniform cleaning the room. She paused when she saw me, turning off the vacuum.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

“Um...yeah. The guy that was staying here...is he…”

“He checked out this afternoon.”

I knew that must have been the case when I saw her, but hearing it confirmed made despair wash over me. I had missed him. I could probably track him down in New York, but I wouldn’t be back until late tomorrow. Until then, the distance I’d created between us would break my heart.

I didn’t know what to do.

CHAPTER14

Levi

Ichecked my phone for the tenth time in the last hour. Hell, I’d been doing it constantly since yesterday, hoping that Summer would reach out. But she hadn’t.

I knew that I could call or text her. I was perfectly capable of that, but I’d already tried that in the past and she just blocked me. Foryears.

Besides, why did I always have to be the one to reach out? Shouldn’t that go both ways?

Maybe she truly didn’t care about me as much as I cared about her. After what happened at the flea market yesterday, that was far from impossible. But somehow, I didn’t believe it to be true in my heart.

My stupid, naive heart.

If only I could listen to my head more. Then, I would just give up on this whole thing with Summer.

But I wasn’t the quitting type. I was determined to get her back into my life— hadn’t I made that promise to myself and to her? I’d decided a long time ago that she was worth fighting for.

Tucking my phone back into my pocket, I knew what I had to do. I had to tell her that I wasn’t giving up, even if I had to fight her own family every step of the way. I was going to show her that I kept my promises, and all of this pushing me away bullshit was done. I wasn’t going anywhere.

“Sir, please step forward and hand over your ID.”

I blinked at the security guard, knowing that this was the time to act. I wasn’t going through airport security. Not today.

Decision made, I turned to Keith, who was standing behind me. “I have to go. I have to do something.”

“Do something?” he repeated, looking at me like I was crazy. “The plane leaves in half an hour. We’ll be lucky to get through this stupid, long security line in time. You’re not going to make it if you leave now.”
