“I know.” I grinned. “I’ll catch another flight and see you at work on Monday.”

Keith gaped at me, but didn’t object as I got out of the security line, dragging my carry-on suitcase on wheels behind me. I headed straight for the exit, the one that we entered through so recently.

Just before I reached it, a vision of a woman appeared, charging through the glass doors with her dark hair piled up in big curls at the top of her head and a formal dress swishing around her legs. Her eyes were wild as she scanned the airport interior, panting for air as if she’d run inside from the parking lot.

She was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.

When her eyes landed on me, I couldn’t help smirking. I put my hands in my pockets and tilted my head to the side.

“Are you looking for me?”

I saw her swallow hard and tears filled her eyes. “Y—yes. I’m so sorry. For everything.”

“Everything?” I repeated. “What do you mean?”

“I never should have made you my enemy. It cost us so much time together. And I’m sorry for not wanting to listen to you until you made me. And more than anything, I’m sorry I didn’t stick up for you yesterday with my parents. I told Dad everything about what your dad did to you and what you mean to me.”

I was happy to hear that she’d finally told her dad the truth, but that wasn’t what really mattered at the moment. She was here, she came after me.

“Exactly what do I mean to you?” I asked. I needed to hear it.

She took a deep breath. “Everything. I want to be with you. I can’t live with you as my enemy anymore.”

I couldn’t help chuckling as I closed the distance between us. With my arms around her waist, I pulled her close and placed a kiss on the tip of her nose.

“We were never enemies. You were just playing hard to get.”

Summer laughed, and the sound of it gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling in the center of my chest. Her arms came around my neck and she looked into my eyes. I could see the extent of her feelings for me in those green depths.

“I love you,” she said.

The emotion that swelled inside of me at those words was more powerful than anything I’d ever felt before. She meant it.

“I love you, too,” I replied, running the palm of my hand up her slender back. I pulled her closer, kissing her parted lips even as I smiled. I couldn’t help myself, I was so happy.

I finally got the girl.

EPILOGUE

Summer

Music filled the apartment, and my heart seemed to lift along with the sweeping and fluttering notes that were meant to imitate a folk-song style. It was beautiful and subtle, and I had a small smile on my lips as I moved the bow back and forth across the violin’s strings.

I was in my new apartment, taking advantage of the rehearsal space that I now had. When Levi and I were looking for a place to move in together, he insisted that I have a room I could use for this. It was a dream of mine to be able to stand in front of big windows overlooking the city and play my music. I had vintage violins hanging on the walls, which I had been collecting for years.

I loved this new apartment, with its dark wooden floors and white-painted brick walls. It was three bedrooms, one of which I used for my rehearsal space, and I hoped that we’d eventually use another one of them for a nursery. Some day.

Levi and I had been together six months, so we weren’t ready for that just yet. We were still just enjoying our time with each other, making up for the years we missed out on together.

The door of my rehearsal space opened behind me, and I stopped playing, looking over my shoulder as Levi sauntered into the room, looking pleased with himself.

“What are you smirking about?” I asked, bending down just long enough to put my violin in its case.

“I did it. I followed the recipe exactly and now we have a chicken roasting in the oven.”

Levi’s new interest was cooking, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. He was great at it, and I hardly ever had to cook a thing anymore. I felt spoiled.

I glanced at the clock on the wall. “Looks like everyone will be here in half an hour. I can help you with the side dishes.”
