Falling For Autumn 7

Kolson

“ImetAutumnearlier. Marco was being pervy.” Mackenzie turned toward Autumn. “You didn’t tell me you tutored.”

It was awkward having both girls here. He didn’t want these two very different parts of his life to collide. He hadn’t realized that Mackenzie was going to be here when he invited Autumn. Not that Kolson was trying to play them. He hadn’t even thought about Autumn that way. At least not until tonight.

Kolson may have thought Autumn was kind of cute before, but seeing her tonight was different. She wore a crop top, but high waisted jeans. There wasn’t skin showing, but she kept crossing her arms as if she were trying to hide her belly button. Standing here with Mackenzie and Ryder, she looked like she wanted to bolt.

Kolson wasn’t quite ready to see her leave. He had hoped that talking about homework would relax her, it seemed to, if only for a minute, but then they had to come downstairs to be bombarded by everyone.

Mackenzie made it worse by wrapping her tiny, cold hand around his bicep like she was laying claim to him. He ignored the scowl when he moved away from her. “I promised Autumn a soda.”

Then he walked away from Mackenzie and waved for Autumn to follow. He didn’t bother looking back. However, Autumn kept looking over her shoulder.

“I don’t think your girlfriend likes you hanging out with another girl,” Autumn said.

“She’s not really my girlfriend.” He walked into the kitchen. “Excuse me,” he said to the couple kissing beside the fridge. They moved without disconnecting.

“How is someone not really your girlfriend?” Autumn asked.

Kolson opened the door and reached for a soda. When he turned, her brow was furrowed. He was beginning to learn that was the face she made when she was thinking. Like when she looking around the bedroom. Or when he was on the phone with his mom.

“You stayed with her the other night,” Autumn said.

Kolson sighed. He preferred to give her as little detail as possible about his non-relationship with Mackenzie. “Is cola okay?”

She nodded and took the can from him. “I think she thinks she’s your girlfriend.”

“Mackenzie and I are just friends.” He shut the fridge after grabbing himself a water. If he drank a soda, he’d be sluggish for his morning workout. He’d already reached his beer limit. Drinking enough to help him sleep, but not too much that he would pay for it in the morning.

“Like friends with benefits?” Her words made him pause as he was taking a drink.

He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “You make a lot of assumptions.” He wasn’t about to tell her she was right.

“Why’d you stay the night with her?” Autumn tilted her head.

Kolson leaned against the counter. She wasn’t going to let it go, was she? “It’s complicated.”

“The fact that you sleep with her, but you won’t call her your girlfriend?” She took a sip of soda. “My brother does that. My mom says don’t give the milk for free if they won’t buy the cow.”

“What?” He shook his head. “Who’s the cow?”

Autumn leaned against the counter beside him. She was definitely amusing tonight.

“That would be Mackenzie?” She lifted an eyebrow. When she shifted her feet, her arm brushed against his.

“Don’t let her hear you say that.” Kolson lifted the water bottle to his mouth. The closer Autumn stood, the more he smelled lemon. He liked it. It wasn’t an overpowering flowery perfume.

“I think the moral of the quote is don’t give …” Her cheeks turned pink and he liked that she rendered herself speechless.

“Don’t give what?” He grinned. He wanted her to say it.

“It for free.”

He tilted his head. “It?” Even though this was fun, he preferred not to talk about his sex life.

“Intercourse,” Autumn said.
