Falling For Autumn 13

Kolson

“Ican’twaitto meet her.” Kolson’s mom said on the other end of the phone.

They weren’t technically together. He liked Autumn, even though he wasn’t sure she liked him like that. But Kolson couldn’t help but tell his mom about the awesome girl he’d met. He hoped that someday he could bring her to meet Mom. She’d think Autumn was just as cool as he did.

“Did I tell you I got an A on my sociology test?” He said.

“That’s awesome,” she replied. “Did you get the care package?”

“The protein bars? Yeah, thanks.” He’d been happy to receive them, but also felt bad knowing how much they cost.

“Not that one, I’ve sent another.”

“Mom, you didn’t need to.”

“You need to stop worrying about money. I’m the parent. That’s my job,” she said. But he couldn’t help it. Kolson felt bad for coming to college instead of getting a job right out of high school to help, but Mom insisted he go.

“I can Venmo money for a date,” she said.

“I’m taking her on a free date.” He’d been proud of himself for coming up with something cheap, but not cheesy.

“You are? Where?” Mom said.

“It’s an outdoor movie the film students are showing.”

“That sounds romantic.”

“Mom.” He groaned.

His phone beeped as Mom began to say something else. It was Mackenzie. I forgive you.

He hadn’t talked to her since the party, but had no intentions of going back to being friends-with-benefits. He opted to send her a thumbs up instead of a regular reply.

“My break’s over. I have to go,” Mom said apologetically. “Kick some butt at your game. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

Whenever he had a chance to talk to his mom, it was usually short stents squeezed between his schedule and hers. At least he’d been able to tell her about Autumn. The last time he’d spoken to her, Autumn had been there.

Kolson opened his social media and found Autumn’s profile. He scrolled through her pictures. There weren’t many and she shared very little information. There was a photo with her friend from the party. Another of her with a guy beside her on the beach. The dude was tall and stringy, but he resembled Autumn. That had to be her brother.

She only had a couple selfies. He was happy to see that there didn’t seem to be a boyfriend. He clicked on a tagged photo of her friend. Berkely had a lot more photos than Autumn. He scrolled through the overload of selfies searching for photos of Autumn. Soon he came to a picture from track season. Autumn and Berkely in their uniforms. Autumn’s hair was in two braids, and she was smiling a smile he was becoming addicted to.

He scrolled a little further and came to a photo of Autumn and Berkley by a pool in shades and bikini tops. Without thinking, he liked the photo. It was only afterwards that he realized what he’d done. It was from months ago. Maybe Berkely wouldn’t notice or tell Autumn. Did it make him seem like a stalker? He hurried to unlike it before she saw.

When his phone buzzed again, his stomach dropped. It was Mackenzie. Seriously?

Yeah, she seriously could not take a hint. Kolson didn’t even bother replying that time. He plugged in his phone and lay back on his mattress.

When there was a frantic knock on his door, he looked over to see his roommate’s empty bed. Then groaned and stood. His muscles were sore from practice.

“Brendan, if you locked yourself out again.” He opened the door. It wasn’t his roommate. It was Mackenzie. Her cherry red lips were pursed and her hands were on her hips. Her cheeks were as pink as the bedazzled sweatsuit wore.

“I can’t believe you’re ghosting me.” She waltzed in as if he’d invited her.

“I wasn’t ghosting you.” Yet, he kind of was. He shut the door in case this got loud. “I sent you a thumbs up.”
