She whirled around. Her blonde hair swung like a helicopter. “I thought we were friends.”

“What do you want me to say, Kenz?” He held up his hands. “We were friends.”

“Were?” She tilted her head, her fake lashes blinking so quickly it was a wonder they didn’t fly off.

He opened his mouth to say something, but she held up her hand and shook her head.

“I don’t know what’s going on with you or what kind of fetish you have sleeping with your tutor.”

“I’m not sleeping with her.” Kolson clenched his jaw. Not that it was Mackenzie’s business, but he didn’t want anyone to think that about Autumn.

"Then what is it?” There was a lilt in Mackenzie’s voice. Her eyes searched his. He didn’t want to upset her.

He shook his head and ran his hand over the back of his neck. “I don’t think we want the same things.”

“All I want is for us to be friends, like we always have been, lately you’ve been pulling away.” Mackenzie poked out her glossy bottom lip.

“I …” He shook his head. Kolson wasn’t a bad guy. He hadn’t been using her, they had an agreement, hadn’t they?

“Did I do something?”

“No,” he said. “It’s just … getting complicated.”

Mackenzie put her hands on her hips. “It’s just friends with benefits.”

“Yet when I talked to another girl at a party you butted in,” he said.

She sighed. “If you’re going to lie, get your stories straight. I thought you said you weren’t sleeping with her.”

“I’m not.” Kolson took a step back and crossed his arms. “But I like her.”

“You’re dating and she’s not doing it with you?” Mackenzie mirrored him, crossing her own arms.

“We aren’t together, but I like her. We have a date, and we’ll see where it goes.” He shrugged. “But I’m not going to sleep with you and pursue another girl.”

“You need to tell me these things.” She shoved him. “We’re friends, remember?”

“You’re not pissed?” He spoke slowly.

Mackenzie dramatically rolled her eyes, “Of course not, we’re friends.” She shoved his shoulder. “One of the reasons you’re my friend is because you’re such a good guy. You don’t want to continue sleeping with me while you pursue another girl.”

Kolson let out a breath of relief. He thought that Mackenzie would hate him after that.

“What did you think? That I wanted us to be together?”

Kolson nodded sheepishly.

“Gosh, Tackett, you are full of yourself,” she teased. “The only thing I’m mad about is you not talking to me for days.”

Kolson nodded. He felt like a heel for not talking to her now. “I know. I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine.” She slugged him in the shoulder again. “I hope this girl is worth it.”

“Me too,” he said.

“You want to order pizza.” She sat on his mattress. “I don’t want to go back to the house right now.”

He nodded. A weight had lifted off his chest knowing that Mackenzie wasn’t mad at him. That she even supported it.
