Falling For Autumn 24

Autumn

Lastnighthadbeen the worst night of Autumn’s life. She’d been tempted to throw her birth control in the trash. Mom had taken her after she’d stayed at Kolson’s dorm that night. She’d been excited to tell Kolson. She was going to tell him the truth and that she was ready to have sex during the study session last night. The study session never happened. He didn’t need a tutor now anyway his paper was finished.

“Hey.” His voice was soft, and he reached for her again as her stupid eyes leaked.

While Autumn was in her bed crying last night, he was in bed with someone else. She took a deep breath. Autumn hadn’t even wanted a boyfriend. She needed to focus on school.

“I …” His touch only made her heart ache more.

She moved away.

“I wanted to come talk to you,” he said. “That’s what I was headed to do.”

“You got laid, now you can think clearly?”

“No.” His brow furrowed. “That’s not … Mackenzie and I just talked.”

Autumn pressed her lips together. “But you couldn’t talk to me.”

“I haven’t been with anyone else since before that party.”

“Why? It’s not like we were anything special.” It killed her to speak those words. “I’m not going to be here next fall anyway.”

“You …” He shook his head.

“I have to get to class.” When Autumn walked away, he didn’t follow. Her chest was so heavy she could barely breathe. She ducked inside the nearest building and watched as he shuffled down the sidewalk. He lifted his hand to his eyes a few times before he disappeared.

Was he crying? A lump grew in her throat. She couldn’t go there. It was hard enough. Her plan was safer. As soon as he was gone, she left the building. Autumn had perfect attendance in all her classes, but as much as she wanted to force herself to go, she couldn’t.

Her chest ached as she passed the sorority house. It wasn’t until she was at home, that her tears let loose. She curled into her bed and didn’t move for twenty-four hours.

“Do you want me to kick his ass?” Preston leaned against her door.

Autumn shook her head.

“For the record, I didn’t know you being seventeen was going to be that big of a deal,” Preston said.

“It’s not your fault. He could have listened to me.” As irritating as her brother was, he wasn’t to blame. She didn’t regret not telling Kolson how old she was from the beginning, because at least she found out now that things wouldn’t work.
