Falling For Autumn 25

Kolson

“YoushouldbringAutumn.” Mom said through the phone. The reminder that he couldn’t bring Autumn stung.

Why did he stay the night at Mackenzie’s? He could have walked back to his dorm. He could have responded to Autumn’s message and told her he still cared about her. That he forgave her.

“Autumn and I broke up.” He wasn’t sure how that came out with his voice cracking.

“Oh no, I thought you two were perfect,” she said.

“I did, too.” He ran his hand over his face.

“What happened?”

“I found out she’s still in high school.” Kolson wasn’t sure how much to share.

“She’s your tutor?”

He nodded even though Mom couldn’t see him. “She’s a genius.”

“She’s definitely special,” Mom said.

“She is.” His heart squeezed. He missed Autumn badly and it’d only been a few days. When he thought of something she would laugh about or when he wanted to tell her about his game. Especially when he saw the A at the top of his essay.

“How old is she?”

“Seventeen.”

“That’s all? By the way you are sulking I thought you were going to tell me she was fifteen.”

“I overreacted. It was more that she didn’t tell me. She let me assume she was over eighteen. Then I went to visit Mackenzie.”

“Your friend Mackenzie?”

That had been his story when it came to Mackenzie as far as his mom was concerned.

“I fell asleep at Mackenzie’s. Autumn saw me walk out the next morning. Early.”

“How early are you talking?” Mom asked.

“Early enough to look like the walk of shame.”

“Oh Honey,” she said.

“I was planning on talking to her later that day and making things right, but she

wouldn’t listen after that.”

“She cared about you. She was hurt, I’m sure.”

The last thing Kolson wanted to do was hurt Autumn. Yet, he couldn’t help

but hear her words, ‘we weren’t anything special,’ nagging inside his head.

“I could tell by looking at you two that you’re in love.”

“Even if she was, not now.”

“When did all this happen?”

“Monday night and Tuesday morning.”

“There’s been enough time for you both to cool off and get your minds straight. Try to talk to her again.”

“Mom,” he said. “She said she doesn’t want to be with me.”

“People say things they don’t mean when they’re hurting. If the last time you talked to her was when she saw you walk out of Mackenzie’s, she was probably in shock. Try again, if she still won’t talk to you, then respect that.”

“I don’t know.” He wasn’t sure his heart could take it.
