Fall For Autumn 26

Autumn

Autumnhatedthatshe had to walk by the sorority house every day. It almost made her drive to class, but that would be a waste of gas. Instead, she shoved her hands in her pockets and faced the ground as she walked by.

“Autumn?”

Autumn’s heart dropped at her name. It was a girl’s voice. No doubt, the girl that Kolson was messing around with.

Autumn turned toward her. Mackenzie stood there in her fitted jacket and leggings. Her hair was done and her makeup perfect. Her nails were long and painted without any chipping. Why did Autumn even think she could compete with her?

“Hey,” she said like they were best buds. “You heading to class?”

Autumn nodded.

“Can I walk with you?” Mackenzie put her hands on her backpack straps and began to walk.

“Sure.” Autumn said even though she was the last person she wanted to walk with.

“Have you talked to Kolson lately?” Mackenzie started off with the elephant, why not?

“We broke up,” Autumn said. “He’s free for you.”

“That’s not why I’m asking. I haven’t heard from him since …”

“I know you slept together the night we broke up.”

“What?” Mackenzie shook her head. “No, he came over drunk and upset. I listened to him talk about you. I told him that he should talk to you. Did he tell you we slept together?”

“Well no,” Autumn said. “Wait, what did he say about me?”

“He was hurt you didn’t tell him your real age, but I understand why you didn’t,” she said. “I thought he decided to talk to you and work things out.”

Autumn’s heart fell. She took a deep breath. She wasn’t going to entertain this thought. No. She was just beginning to get her focus back on school and not Kolson. She had new tutor session this week. She was moving on.

“Kolson and I have been friends for a long time. I’ve never seen him like he was with you.”

Autumn didn’t know what to say.

“I can’t believe he didn’t have the balls to talk to you. What an idiot.”

“He tried,” Autumn said. “I saw him come out of your house that morning. I thought you two …”

“Horrible timing.” Mackenzie frowned and shook her head. “Nothing happened that night. He cares about you. He wouldn’t have been that upset if he didn’t.”

Autumn’s ears buzzed. She blinked. She did miss him and his goofy smile. She missed making fun of him. She missed being in his arms. She missed his laugh.

“This is me.” Mackenzie pointed to the first building. “Think about talking to him, I’d hate to see you two end because of a stupid misunderstanding.”

Autumn nodded.

Of course, now she couldn’t concentrate on her class, yet again.

It was after the class released that she looked at her phone. A message from Kolson. Can we talk?

She hadn’t realized how much she wanted to until now. She messaged back. When?

Tonight, normal study time?
