“How could I not?” Tatiana Marcus had quietly made my life a living hell for a solid year at Carrington Collins Prep. She was an egotistical bitch with a serious superiority complex and I had unintentionally stolen her favorite toy. She and Mack had apparently been off and on for most of eighth grade and had broken up in a blaze of glory after being caught naked in the Egyptian exhibit of the Natural History Museum just before I joined their class in ninth. She blamed his friendship with me for their permanent off status. Even after being broken up for a year, they still had the most talked about sex life in our grade.

“I never slept with her.”

I choked on my mouthful of dirty hot cocoa. “What are you talking about? You were sleeping with her until two weeks before we met.”

He shook his head. “Never even got to second base.”

“Are you joking?” This was astounding. It was on par with learning the moon landing had been a fake.

“Nope.”

“But the Natural History Museum—”

“Was a lie, mostly.”

I opened my mouth. Closed it again. How did I not know this? How had he managed to keep this to himself all this time? I wasn’t sure whether to be impressed or horrified.

“Does Nash know?” Surely I couldn’t be the first person to get this juicy, albeit fifteen year-old, gossip.

“Nope, just me, Tatiana, and now you.”

I gaped then took another large slurp of cocoa. “Why?”

“Why lie? Or why am I telling you?”

“Both.”

He leaned back on one elbow and tipped his mug to his lips. He looked like something out of a winter porn, all wrapped in plaid and sipping his hot cocoa amongst a nest of faux fur. But my mind was so engrossed in the whole Mack and Tatiana being a lie that I wasn’t solely focused on the view. I did manage to catch a glimpse of lower abdomen as he scratched his head though.

“She didn’t have a great relationship with her dad, I figured it was all about attention. She always told me she was saving herself forthe one.” The answer didn’t surprise me, half our school had similar issues, but the way he phrased it made my spidey senses tingle (I was pretty sure it wasn’t the whiskey).

“And what the hell did she consider you then?” If Mack wasn’t ‘the one’ material I didn’t know who the hell was. Certainly no one at Carrington.

“Not that, evidently.” The response was uncharacteristically flat.

“Okay, so she was a moron with A-grade daddy issues, not surprising. Although I would like to be able to slap her retroactively.”

“As much as I would have liked to see that, there is no need to slap her on my account.”

“Oh there is, but we’ll move on. Why did you go along with it?”

“I understood how it was to have a shitty relationship with your dad. Plus, I got to feel her boobs, and that was a pretty good pay off at the time,” he said with a shrug and I laughed.

“Charming.”

“I’d known her since we were five or six and she wanted to change her rep. Until we started dating she was the good girl, for the most part, and she hated it.”

“But you guys were together for a year, more.”

“And she was cool for a lot of that time. But by the end of it her plans were getting crazy and Nash was telling me it was time to break up permanently. He didn’t need to tell me, I already knew. So, when she pulled my dick out behind a fucking mummy, or whatever it was, in the Natural Histroy Museum I knew I’d had enough. Right after I got done for indecent exposure, that is.”

I didn’t quite manage to catch my giggled snort before it escaped.

“Oh, you think this is funny, do you?” he asked, setting aside his mug and rising onto his knees, stalking toward me as best he could through the sea of blankets and overstuffed cushions between us.

I shook my head holding my mug out like a sad little shield. “Nuh-uh. Don’t look at me like that, I am not spilling hot cocoa in here.”

He took the mug and set it down with his, just outside the door of the tent. I tried to wiggle away in the limited space but he grabbed my calf and pulled me flat, amusement lighting his eyes.
