“No! Please! I hurt so badly! I can barely handle it. You have to help me.” Anita shocks the hell out of me, her voice ringing through the air, echoing through the stairwell. She never gave us the warning, jumping right into her performance as imprisoned omega.

I open and close my mouth, unsure if I should say anything. This kind of roleplay is freaky as fuck, and I kind of don’t want to have anything to do with it. I hadn’t realized how awful even pretending to lock up an omega would feel. I don’t know if it’s because of Kinsey or just my nature, but it takes everything in me to remain composed.

“Just keep moving,” Wilder growls, his assholeness finally coming into use. “We can’t have you roaming around the fucking palace, begging for someone to get you off. If you don’t like the toys, then I don’t know what to tell you. So go down now. Don’t argue. If you make me carry you...” Wilder leaves his fake threat open-ended, tightening his jaw as he glances at Kinsey and Anita. I’m glad he controls the situation. I can’t even think straight right now. He’s a better actor than me—or more in control. Fuck me.

Kinsey exhales a soft whimpering breath, squeezing me tightly. She doesn’t like the way he sounds right now. Her emotions waft around me in a hot wave with her scent. Now I realize that this might trigger her. I was stupid to even agree to let her come with us to make Anita comfortable. Because she went through this exact scenario, except it was far worse. It was real. Anita is only here to bait information from Rommel.

“Come on, baby. Let Wilder handle this. Anita is fine.” I stroke my fingers along Kinsey’s arm, pulling her in even closer.

Whipping her head back and forth, she denies me. She sucks in her bottom lip and straightens her shoulders. I rub my fingers over hers, hoping she relents. I hate seeing her so conflicted, but I know she won’t let me take her away. Her tight mouth proves it. She managed to compose herself with a couple of breaths and blinking her eyes, getting her emotions under control.

“I need to be here. I don’t want to just hear what happened from Wilder.” Kinsey swallows and shakes out her fingers. “It’s not real. It’s all just a mind game.” She says the words quietly for herself as if she needs convincing.

“I said move!” Wilder shouts, motioning for Anita to head into the stairwell.

Anita whimpers, her voice echoing off the concrete. She struts down the steps with confidence until she reaches the last couple that will bring her into Rommel’s view. Rommel now sits on the cold ground, chained to the floor by his wrists and feet.

“Please, help me. You’re such a strong alpha. You can take care of me.” Anita turns and looks up at Wilder, her eyes wide and her gaze glassy. “You don’t have to do this. Just take me back up. I’ll do anything.”

Shit. I bristle at her fake suggestion. Kinsey clutches me tighter, sensing my agitation.

“Shut up and get away. I can’t stand your scent, and since you won’t stop trying to seduce every damn alpha, you’ll be going into the cell over there.” Wilder waves his arm instead of pushing her, but the gesture sends Anita scrambling away.

She cries out, tripping over her feet to land on the ground. Her handcuffed wrists make it impossible for her to get back up. Writhing on the cold floor, she cries, the sound convincing enough to nearly trick me. If I didn’t know she was acting, I’d believe her performance.

I expect Kinsey to rush forward and end this before we can get a chance to do anything, but she remains frozen by my side and out of view from Rommel. I’m glad she does because I wouldn’t remain here otherwise.

“Hey, honey. Come over here. I’ll help you.” Rommel clicks his tongue, his disgusting nature coming through as he tries to offer his services to Anita. They’re not close enough for him to know that she’s not in heat, but she knows how to play the part. I bet she’s done it a dozen times with the men who frequented Tamsin’s club. There are a lot of bastards into roleplay.

“Thank God. Finally, someone who is strong enough to help me.” Anita stretches her neck up, looking at Rommel. She turns to Wilder. “Please, let me go to him. He’ll help me. You can let him help me.”

Wilder growls and lifts Anita up on her feet, stopping her from moving forward. “No. He’s an asshole who isn’t cooperating. He wants to see us fall. You’re going to have to suffer through this. I’m sorry.”

Whimpering, Anita pouts her mouth, jerking her attention back to Rommel. “You have to do something. You said you would help me. If you help them, then you could help me. Please. I’m in so much pain. My body aches. I have a need that only you can take care of. You’re so strong and handsome. Please do this for me. I’m begging you.”

The omega sure can act. If I didn’t know any better, I’d believe her. It’s even fucking with my head a little bit, thinking that if she acts like she’s in heat long enough, she might actually go into it.

Or maybe it’s because Kinsey squeezes my hand and rubs against me, squeezing her legs and shifting as if she’s uncomfortable.

“He will not keep his word. The only reason I’m alive right now is because he needs me. I’m sorry, honey. He’s not going to do anything for either of us.” Rommel grumbles with his words, yanking against his chains as if he can break free.

Wilder stands in silence, looming over Anita and glaring at Rommel. “If you don’t give us the answers, I will kill you anyway. But if you do, I’ll let you live a bit longer. You can take care of this omega. The only way you’re going to stay alive is if you work with us. Do you understand?”

“Please,” Anita says, her voice mewing almost in a feline manner. “I’m begging you. Just tell him. I’ll make sure he doesn’t hurt you. You’re going to be my alpha. You’re going to be the one to protect me, and he won’t hurt the man I choose.”

Ah hell. That’s what I’m talking about. I don’t even have to see Rommel to know that he’s already lost his good sense and has fallen to his nature. It’s hard to resist an unclaimed omega when you have none yourself.

“Fine. Fine. Jarvis has a skeleton key for the fortress. Your father has a secret passageway that you can access from the very edge of your territory. It is within Mount Gold. It was built before he became king, and it would’ve been passed down to you had you just waited your turn to take reign.” Rommel sneers with his words, his face twisting.

I can’t stop myself from stepping into view, and I unsheathe my dagger, handing it to Kinsey. “So, what if they plan to infiltrate the fortress from there. That won’t give them access to us here.”

“You’re wrong. You don’t really think that King Winston would’ve just allowed you to be disconnected from his rulership, do you? There is a connecting tunnel that leads here. Ten miles long. All it will take is an army...one already closing in. Maybe even already here.” Rommel purses his lips, his eyes turning toward Kinsey. “You better pray those alphas are as powerful as you think. If not—well, don’t you worry. Uncle Rommel has a nice new pack for you.”

“You monster!” Kinsey loses her shit, launching away from me and toward Rommel.

Wilder intercepts, scooping her off her feet. I open my arms, readying to catch her as he tosses her back to me, not letting her within a foot of Rommel. My mind races with his comments. The fucker wasn’t only just sent to prove our securities weakness. He was sent as a decoy to the fortress, leaving our palace vulnerable. They could be fucking anywhere. They could’ve planted explosives.

“We have to move! Evacuate everyone,” Wilder says, his voice remaining cold. “The fucker isn’t brave enough to face us. If his army lies in wait, it’ll be to pick us all off after he destroys our palace. He’s not stupid.”
