“But we do.” I pull the weight from my pocket.

“How did you get that?” he gasped.

“Daethian brought it to us. He killed King Ganglin.”

Randsin’s already wide gaze flared. He looked from me to the token in my hand and back up to my face. Today he had both gained and lost a family. Then to be told that the man who treated him like a son was also gone, I swore I could feel the ache of his pain echoing into my mind.

“Why didn’t you start with that when you got here? Problem solved, meeting adjourned.” Graceson stood.

“I already knew King Ganglin was dead,” Hattie grimaced.

“As did I.” King Windre stepped toward the table.

“Did you know?” Graceson asked, pointing at Jerydin, who nodded slowly. “Did you?” He pointed to Randsin. Randsin shook his head and looked away.

“That was a more delicate subject for him,” King Windre whispered.

“I’m sorry,” I added with as much sympathy as I could muster, but I was glad King Ganglin was dead and I’d never wish him to be back.

“So everyone knew but me.” Graceson crossed his arms.

“Great, here comes the pouting.” Jerydin smiled.

“Shut up, you’re useless now. We don’t need your remedy for the Nymphs now that the witch broke that spell.”

Jerydin lost his smile and pinned Graceson with his stare, daring him to say more. Tension was quickly rising in the room. Chaos was on the brink of erupting.

“Randsin you should go for your crown,” I said quietly.

“Are you suggesting that we don't destroy the tokens?” Shavarra interjected.

“They were given to us for a reason. The tokens stay as they are. I’m suggesting that Randsin take his back to his home. Hattie and I can keep the other, as we were meant to. But we should do one thing.” I bit my lip, not knowing how they would receive this.

“What?” Randsin rasped to our minds, finally looking back up.

“You and I use the tokens to seal up the portals between our worlds.”

Randsin thought for a moment, his eyebrows scrunching. “But what if we need to use the tokens again, for their intended use.”

“We create another portal. A small one, used only for letters. Then, should we need it, we reach through and make the portal bigger.”

“I mean, it’s a pretty good idea.” King Windre tapped his chin. “Protects us from each other's worlds a little more.”

Dace remained quiet, his arms folded over his torso like a hug. He didn't fancy keeping the token. I didn’t doubt that the power made him nervous, and the thought of protecting me and the token together was even scarier.

Randsin pushed his chair back, standing to lean over the table, and offered me a hand. “I think it’s time I truly go home,” he said.

Everything that had been so tense before inside of me melted away at his phrase. Good was coming out of this, as I knew that someday it would. Randsin would be off to where he belonged. No longer the “son” of a wicked king who would never pass down his crown. Nymphs would be awakening to their powers today, and both tokens were in our custody.

We had control, and we could use it to make the world better.

Chapter26

Milo

From my window, I could see Red laying out in the sun. Her hair was fanned out over the ground, a book resting in her hands, held above her face, casting its shadow over her features.

Friends. The word felt as wrong as the idea of never getting to love her. She was convinced that the ache would heal and our presence in each other’s lives was ultimately inevitable. But the wounds from Eydis had barely healed over.
