I knew women would flirt with him still, but I thought that he respected me enough to not reciprocate anymore. I thought I was different. I thought he–

No.

I have to stop this.

Why I believed anything he said since coming here is beyond me.

A car pulls into the parking lot at a speed I know has to be Ashley, and I look up to see her worried face through the window. Using all of my energy, I push off my car and get in hers.

“I knew he’d do something to fuck this up. To fuckyouup. Now, I’m going to fuck him up,” she growls as soon as I close the door, her mouth twisted in a furious grimace.

“Ash,” I whisper, not wanting to hear this right now.

“No! Don’tAshme. I’m going to slap that sexy smirk off his face so he can’t use it on any more women.”

“Please. Can we just go? I don’t want to do this here.”

“Yeah, yeah, sure.” Glancing at me, I can tell she’s holding her tongue from saying so much more, and she drives to her house in silence.

Of course, all bets are off though when she parks in her driveway two minutes later.

“Okay, talk,” she says, turning her car off and facing me fully in her seat.

“We were having such a nice night,” I start, looking straight ahead out the windshield. “I love him. I had just let myself love him, Ash.” My voice sounds distant to my ears.

I didn’t have a choice in falling in love with him. It happened even when I didn’t want to. I didn’t want any of this.

I tried to avoid getting hurt at every turn, and yet here I am, feeling every crack in me he filled, breaking simultaneously.

“When we went down to the bar tonight, and he kissed me for everyone to see. He claimed me, and I claimed him. But then”–I take a deep breath–“I went to the bathroom, and came out to find a beautiful woman all over him.”

“What?! That fucker,” she says low and menacing.

“He didn’t push her away. He didn’t do anything. She slid her hand up his chest and leaned in, her boobs all up on him, and was whispering in his ear. He let her.Andhe put his hands on her, Ash. Has he been flirting with women every night?” I ask, turning my eyes to hers finally. “He embarrassed me. He claimed me, and then an hour later, he was cozying up with another woman.”

“Mel, I’m sorry.”

“Am I overreacting?” I ask softly. “I didn’t want to confront him in there. I’m not that girl. I don’t make scenes. And I sure as hell didn’t want to be any more embarrassed in a bar full of people. I was already getting looks of pity from the people I passed on the way out.”

“Oh my god,” she groans, wiping her hands down her face. “First, no, you’re not overreacting. You saw something you didn’t like, and you can react any way you want. Second, don’t be embarrassed. He fucked up, and he’s just making himself look like more of the asshole that everyone already thinks he is.”

“I thought you liked him.”

“I did. But I knew his dick-ish ways would show eventually. A man like him, Mel… I don’t think he can be faithful.”

“But…” I sigh. “I thought…”

“I know, Mely-pops. And I’m sorry. You don’t deserve this. Now, let’s go inside. Ryan is making you hot chocolate, and trust me, it’ll help everything.”

“I don’t have my stuff – my purse, keys, overnight bag. I left it all in his apartment. I checked before calling you, and it was locked.”

“I’ll get it all tomorrow. I promise. And I’ll fuck him up when I do, too.”

“Alright.” I give her a weak smile, knowing she’s just trying to make me feel better.

Trudging inside, Ryan turns to us from the stove. “Hey, Mel. Go sit on the couch and I’ll bring you a cup when it’s done.”

“Thanks.” I try and give him a smile, but I’m not sure how it comes across. I can see he wants to say something, but I’m glad he doesn’t go off on how shitty Alex is like Ash did. Because despite what happened tonight, I don’t like hearing people put him down.
