“Come on, we’ll help you bring your stuff in while there’s still a little light left,” Ally tells me when the sun dips below the horizon.

“Thanks. Yeah, I definitely don’t want to run into any bears.”

“You’re funny,” she says, “but they’re out there. You know that’s how Jake and I met.”

“Well who do I call if I see one?” I ask nervously.

“You can call me, and I’ll have Jake come and save you. You’re just not allowed to fall in love with him like I did.”

“No problem.” I laugh.

Little does she know, he’s not really my type. He’s super good looking and ruggedly handsome in a woodsy, Thor-like way, but I’m more into the men that I shouldn’t like. The ones I know I should stay away from, but can’t help but be attracted to anyway. That’s why none of them last, and why I stopped bothering to date in general. Safe and nice equals boring, but hot and dangerous means heartbreak.

“So, Mel,” Ash starts. “You know how we all saw you dancing with Alex at the wedding?”

At the mention of him, the bag I’m holding slips from my grip and I quickly bend to pick it up. “Uh, yeah?”

Why does everyone need to bring this up to me?

“Was there something going on there?”

“No,” I say quickly. “Nothing. It was just a dance. He asked, and I said yes.”

“Well, you two seemed pretty into it.”

“I was just being nice. And I already had a few glasses of wine in me.”

“Hmm, okay,” Ash says, and I look up in time to see her giving Ally a look.

“What was that look for?”

“What look?” they say at the same time.

They’re ridiculous. I know what they’re thinking, and they need to stop right now.

“Just carry my bags in,” I tell them as I hurry up the porch steps and through the living room, right into the purple bedroom.

The cottage has two bedrooms, both the same, just one is pink themed, and the other purple.

In here, there’s a queen bed that’s covered in lavender sheets and a fluffy comforter with a violet floral pattern. A large purple and beige floral area rug lies in the center of the room, and on either side of the bed are small, light wooden tables with white porcelain lamps, and matching dressers resting up against the wall next to the closet.

The walls are pale purple, with paintings of various flowers in an array of purple hues, but my eyes are drawn to the two windows with the curtains pushed open, showcasing the view of the side of the house – a forest of pine trees.

“I knew you’d choose the purple room,” Ally says, placing the bags she was holding on the floor by the bed. “I put fresh sheets on the bed and moved everything from this closet into the one in the pink room already.”

“I’m that predictable?” I sigh, walking up to the window to get a closer look. The trees seem like they go on forever.

“Yes.” She laughs. “Because I know you love purple. And also no, because you just up and moved here.”

“Hey, what’s up? You okay?” Ash asks, coming up next to me.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just have a lot on my mind. A lot to think about and work out.”

“Like what?”

“Nothing.”

“Mel, talk to us.”
