I sit in his office for a half hour, filling out all sorts of paperwork before I am able to officially start. I’m going to be the full-time weekday nurse, which is 9-5, Monday through Friday. There is another nurse, Jenny, who is on-call on weekday nights and weekends, who Dr. Taylor said didn’t want the full-time position since she’s a mom and enjoys the flexibility of being on-call. Even when the office is ‘officially’ closed, he and Jenny are on-call for any of their patients in need and they either meet at the office or do home visits.

When I finish with my forms, the first patient of the day is already waiting for the doctor out on one of the couches. It’s a young boy and his mom, and by the way the boy is holding his stomach and the dewy look to his skin, I’d say he’s running a fever and has a stomach bug of some sort.

“I’ll see you on Monday then, Melanie,” Dr. Taylor says, placing his large hand on my shoulder. “Enjoy your first weekend here.”

“Thank you, I will. Bye, Pam.” I give her a little wave, and smile at the woman and her son as I walk past them and make way back down the short hallway to the front door.

Tucking the manila folder of my copies of my paperwork under my arm, I smile at nothing in particular, and cross the street, heading directly for The Blueberry Café to get another fix.

The bells chime above my head when I open the door, and the scent of strong coffee and sugary goodness hits me immediately. God, it’s going to be torture working right across the street from here. I should probably take up exercising now as a preventative measure.

Yeah, I’m funny, I know I won’t be doing that.

“Mel!” Ally and Courtney say together.

“Hey, guys!”

“Just coming from the good doctor?” Courtney asks.

“Yeah, I had a few things to fill out before I start on Monday. I’m really excited. He’s all about the patients. And I’ll actually get to know the people I treat, rather than them just being a body in a bed, and someone to get in and out as fast as I can.”

“Oh, wow, that sounds terrible.”

“That’s just how it was.” I shrug.

“Are you ready to celebrate tonight?” Ally asks excitedly, a glimmer in her eyes.

“I am,” I say through a laugh. “Dr. Taylor did tell me to enjoy my first weekend here.”

“Well, if the doctor ordered it, then we have to listen, right?”

“Just what I was thinking.”

The evening comes quickly, and as I stare at my mess of open suitcases and bags, I have a little panic attack. I don’t know what to wear.

As much as I don’t want to think about making an impression on Alex, it’s in the back of my mind. I want to look good. I want him to stare at me. I want to feel his eyes on me like at the wedding. I want him tonotlook any other women. I want him to flirt with me. I want to feel wanted.

Sighing, I play with the ends of my hair. That’s a lot of wants.

I can’t call Ally or Ash for help, because then I’d be admitting that what they saw at the weddingwassomething. And it wasn’t. Not really. But maybe it could be?

Groaning, I dig through everything again, and pull out a pair of skin tight black skinny jeans, a white tank top, and a three-quarter sleeve mauve lace kimono. I bought this kimono a couple months ago and have been dying to wear it, but since I rarely go out anymore, I had no occasion. I really like the way this shade of purple/pink looks against my tan skin.

I curl my hair into loose waves, and add a little extra makeup to my earlier look so my brown eyes are soft, yet alluring. Rounding out my look with a nude lipstick, I smile at myself in the mirror.

I haven’t put effort into my makeup since Ally’s wedding, and before that, I can’t really remember when. I should do it more – dress in clothes, and do my hair and makeup. I think I could use the reminder that I’m still a woman beneath those scrubs.

My phone chimes with a text from Ally letting me know she’s outside with Ashley, and so I throw on my leather jacket and run out to meet them.

“Oh my god, Mel!” Ally yells through her open window. “You look hot as hell!”

Laughing, I climb in the back of her car. “Thanks.”

“You’ll definitely turn heads,” Ash says. “A certain bartender included.”

“I don’t know what you mean.” I smile coyly, knowing she can’t see my face right now.
