The looks on my friend’s faces are priceless when I sit back down.

“Uh, Mel? What did you do to him?” Ally asks.

“Nothing.” I shrug.

“He looks like you just told him you weren’t wearing any underwear,” Ash says.

Laughing, I shake my head, and take another sip, letting the whiskey calm me.

Alex almost kissed me, and I almost let him. I would have let him. I should have let him. A taste of him would be like tasting fire. And even though I know I would get burned, I still want to know what fire tastes like.

“He doesn’t look like that,” I tell them, letting my eyes wander back over to him. He’s pouring a beer now, but as if he can feel my eyes on him, he looks over and holds my gaze, captivating me.

I don’t know if it’s the two glasses of wine I chugged, this whiskey, the close proximity to him in the bathroom, or the look in his eyes now, but Alex is a threat to everything I’ve built for myself. One night, and one taste, would be my downfall. My carefully crafted world would shatter and I’d be left in the rubble and dust to build myself back up.

But that’s why I came here, isn’t it? To recreate and rebuild who I was and the life I was living?

So, really, he’d be doing me a favor by shattering everything I know, and am.

Right?

Maybe?

His fingers dance on the bar’s edge as he waits for someone to order, and I can’t help thinking about what they’d feel like dancing across my skin. I already know he’d ruin me for every other man. Alex is the kind of man who gives a woman exactly what she needs–every fantasy–making it hard for her to move on.

Pulling my eyes away, I look around the table and notice that all four pairs of eyes are on me, and they’re all smiling.

“Yes?” I ask, hoping my face isn’t turning red.

“Oh, nothing.” Ash laughs. “We’ve just been talking, and you haven’t heard a single word because you’ve been eye fucking Alex.”

“No I’m not.”

“You are,” Courtney agrees. “But that’s okay. Because if I wasn’t married to a sexy stud myself, I would be doing the same.”

“Same,” Ally and Ash say together, smiling like fools.

“Oh, really? Should I call Jake, Ryan, and Jack and tell them you guys just said that? I’m sure they’d love to hear how sexy you think Alex is.”

“Bitch.” Ash laughs, taking a long sip from her rum and coke.

“Let’s toast to Mel!” Courtney yells, shutting us all up. “And to Pine Cove, for gaining another Jersey girl!”

“Here, here!” everyone says together.

“Thanks, Courtney.” I smile. “I’m excited to find out what happens next.”

“Oh, I think it’ll involve a certain tattooed, walking sex god,” Ash says casually, making me almost spit out the sip I was taking.

Coughing, I suck in gulps of air, and slam my hand down on the table. “Ashley! What the fuck?”

Laughter rings out around the table and I cover my mouth with my hand because I didn’t realize how loud I just yelled that, and several heads turn towards us.

“Eh.” She just shrugs and leans back in her chair, sipping her drink like she’s so confident in her prediction of the future.

Drink after drink, we laugh, talk shit, and just have fun. I haven’t had a girl’s night out like this in forever.

“I’m going to call my man to come and get me,” Ally says, giggling as she takes her phone out. “Then I’m going to climb him like a tree.”
