“Please, for god’s sake, everyone call your men to come and pick you up before I lose my mind. And Courtney, you’re driving Dara home. Okay? Okay. Thanks.”

“Damn, Mely. Laying down the law,” Ally says, surprised.

Shrugging my shoulder, I give her a sly smile and down the rest of my whiskey.

Ten minutes later, I grab my stuff and go to the bathroom, knowing that by the time I come out, they’ll all be gone. I wash my hands, fluff my hair out, and fix my smudged eye liner before applying a fresh layer of lipstick.

My eyes are a little red and glassy from the whiskey, but my mind is clear.

I head out and make my way to the bar, sliding onto a stool all the way at the end against the wall. And just when I’m about to place my bag and jacket down on the stool next to me, someone beats me to it.

“Hi, beautiful, what’s your name?”

Looking up, I see a handsome man sitting there, smiling. Wow, he’s actuallyreallygood looking.

“I’m Melanie.”

“Melanie. Beautiful name for a beautiful woman.”

“Thank you.” I smile. “And you are?”

“Josh. Can I buy you a drink?”

“Oh, um–”

“Just one,” he says, cutting me off. “I promise.”

I almost turn him down, but then decide that maybe I should see if what I’m feeling for Alex is real, or just a fluke because he’s showing interest in me and I’m so attracted to him. “I’ll have a rosé.”

Josh lifts his hand to get Alex’s attention, and he walks over to us – his jaw set, and face hard.

“What do you want, Josh?” Alex asks, his voice tight.

“Rosé for the lady, and a Jack on the rocks for me.”

His eyes meet mine, and I’m paralyzed where I sit. They’re studying me, warning me, and making me feel like I’m doing something wrong.

“No. You’re cut off,” he says, his eyes boring into mine.

“What?” Josh asks.

“Not you. Her.”

“Alex, what’s up man?”

“Josh, get the fuck out of here. Melanie isn’t yours.”

Alex’s eyes are still holding mine captive, and I can see Josh looking between us from the corner of my eye. “And she’s yours?” he scoffs.

“Yes. Now get the fuck out of here,” he repeats, his voice even harsher this time.

“Are you okay with this, Melanie?”

Alex finally looks away, and pins his hard eyes on Josh. “She’s more than fine with it. Right, Mel?”

Blinking, I’m at a loss for words.

I’m his? What?
