Wow, well isn’t that a little close to home?

“And you want to know what I think of that?” I ask. “I think that that’s a common occurrence in these movies. And if she were to just stay a minute longer, she’d have heard something completely different. They always spy, and then leave before hearing the truth.”

Laughing, he scratches his jaw and takes a bite of pizza. “True. If she had just waited a couple more seconds, she would have seen him pull away from that other woman when she tried to kiss him. But she looked away. She didn’t want to see his betrayal.”

“Who would?” I ask rhetorically, looking over at him.

“No one. But she had it wrong. She was assuming. She didn’t give him a chance.”

“Are we still talking about the movie?”

“What else would we be talking about?”

“Never mind,” I sigh, finishing my slice.

“No. I think it’s time we talk.”

“Well, that’s what you said you were here for.”

“I came here for you.”

“Why?”

“What?”

“Why did you come for me, Alex? I don’t think this should be anything. You and me.”

“I think it should. I told you I want to try.”

“You have plenty of options other than me.”

“Yeah, I know,” he says unapologetically. “But none of them hold an ounce of interest to me. You do.”

“Alex,” I say through a laugh, shaking my head.

“I know you don’t believe me, but I have ways of changing your mind.”

“How?”

“You’ll just have to wait and see.”

“That’s not very reassuring.”

“Let’s play a game, then. Ask me anything you want, and I’ll be completely honest.”

“How is that a game? That’s a conversation. Is honesty something you don’t normally express?”

“Mel.” He laughs. “You’re making this harder than it’s supposed to be.”

“Fine,” I sigh, playing with the ends of my hair. “What’s your last name?” That’s the simplest question I could think of.

Flashing me a wide grin, he rubs his jaw, the ruff sound of his scruff against his hand sending a chill through me. “Bane,” he answers.

“Alex Bane?” That’s the sexiest name I’ve ever heard.

“Yeah, gorgeous. What’s yours?”

“Masters.”
