Nodding, I quickly walk down the hallway and into the kitchen to grab him a bottle, making sure to stop off in my room on the way back to throw on a sweatshirt.

“You didn’t have to cover up on my account, gorgeous.”

Sitting on the opposite end of the couch, I tuck my feet up under me – my defense against the close proximity we’re in.

“I was cold.”

“Sure.” He smiles, grabbing a slice. Nodding at the TV, he asks, “What are we watching?”

“Oh, nothing, I’ll change it,” I say quickly, reaching for the remote. But Alex smiles and gets to it first, holding it up and out of my reach. “Alex!” I yell, but he just laughs. Crawling over to him, I try and grab it, but then stop the second I realize my chest is practically in his face and I’m basically on top of him.

Uh…

Looking down, my eyes meet his, and the playful atmosphere quickly dissipates.

Pulling away, I sit back down on my side of couch and mindlessly play with the ends of my hair.

“So,” he starts, clearing his throat. “What’re we watching?”

“Hallmark Channel,” I tell him, flitting my eyes over to his.

“Huh, I’ve never seen one of these movies. Are they good?”

Rolling my eyes, a smile tugs at my lips. “Yes, but I doubt you’ll like them. They’re sappy and corny and predictable.”

“Sounds okay to me.” He smirks.

“Seriously?” I balk.

“I’m full of surprises, gorgeous. Now, get your ass back over here.” He pats the spot next to him, and I slowly slide over, but make sure to leave a sliver of space between us. It may just be an inch, but it’s the difference between me being able to breathe, and my lungs collapsing from a single touch.

Reaching forward to grab another slice of pizza, his thigh presses into mine, and I hold my breath. “Here you go,” he says, handing me one.

I take it from him and eat it robotically, not tasting it in the slightest. I wish I was still drunk. My feelings are easier to decipher and sort through when I’m relaxed. And having him this close has me all wound up.

The minutes tick by, and the air continues to thicken. The images on the TV blur together, and I have no idea what this movie is about anymore.

“What do you think of that?” Alex’s voice cuts through to me, and I blink, refocusing.

“Of what?”

“The girl jumping to conclusions about the guy cheating.”

“What?”

“Mel, are you not watching what I’m watching?”

“Uh, I think I was daydreaming.”

Chuckling, Alex reaches for another slice of pizza, and his thigh presses into mine again, making me flinch. “About what?”

“What?” I internally roll my eyes. Is that the only word I know?

“What were you daydreaming about?”

“Nothing in particular.” I take another slice to distract myself. “What did I miss?”

“The girl and guy are obviously into each other, but she has her doubts about him. And now she just overheard something that made her doubt him even more, and so she thinks he’s seeing other women.”
