“What? I could have sworn you just said after three. In the morning.”

“Yeah, gorgeous. I told you I would call. Did I wake you?” he asks lazily, and I hear the smile in his voice.

“Yes,” I hiss, the weight of my eyelids making it hard to keep them open.

“Want me to let you go back to sleep?”

“No. It’s okay. I like the sound of your voice,” I admit in my half-sleep state.

His low chuckle vibrates through me again and I grip the phone a little tighter. “Good to know. And your sleepy voice sounds sexy as fuck, baby. Just so you know.”

Laughing, I roll my face into the pillow. “Alex.”

“How was your night?”

“Fine. I didn’t do anything. Just read and watched some TV. How was your night? Any bar fights?”

“No, not tonight. Ashley wasn’t there.”

“What?”

“She caused a bar fight when she first came here and I had to help break it up.”

“Seriously?” I ask incredulously.

“Yeah.” He laughs.

“I didn’t know that.”

“I think she was in shock. But you girls seem to always cause a hurricane when you walk in. It’s like the men in this town forget how to be basic humans when you’re all around.”

“Thank you? I don’t know if I should find that flattering or not.”

“It’s a compliment. But I hate it.”

“Why?”

“Because I have to watch every man look at you. Wanting you.”

“Alex,” I start, my voice warning him.

“Yes, I know it’s a bit hypocritical.”

“A bit?”

“Okay, a lot. But we don’t need to talk about that.”

“You brought it up.” I really hate the reminder that he’s spent his twenties sexing up most of the women he meets.

“I know. I shouldn’t have. So, tell me something.”

“Like what?”

“Anything. Everything.”

“I can’t tell you everything. It’s three in the morning and I’m half asleep.”

“Start with what you’re wearing,” he says, his voice dropping to a deep timber I want to feel against my neck as he kisses his way up to my mouth.
