“Good morning, Melanie,” Dr. Taylor greets in his booming voice. The first few days of working, he startled me every morning. But now I expect it, and love it.

“Morning, Dave.” I had to get used to calling him by his first name, too. I still call him Dr. Taylor in my head, though, and to everyone else because it still seems weird not to.

“Did you have a nice weekend?”

“I did, thank you. You?”

“Yes. My wife and I had dinner with Tyler, and we tried our best to hint that he needed to find a good woman. His older brothers have, and I think it’s time he does, too.”

“You had an intervention dinner?” I smile.

“Something like that.” He laughs. “I doubt he’ll listen, but we had to plant the idea in his head.”

“My parents are the same. But I got away,” I joke.

“You may think so, but this town will adopt you and take great interest in your personal life.”

“Oh.” My smile fades slightly.

“Don’t look so worried, Melanie.” He smiles. “We all mean well.”

“If you say so,” I agree, just so we’ll stop talking about this. It seems today is a day all about Melanie and her love life.

I already have my parents still asking me whenever I talk to them about my life here and if I’ve met a man yet to settle down with and give them grandbabies. Even with hundreds of miles between us, they still want to be intrusive.

“Hi, Pam,” I greet, approaching her desk.

“Hi, Mel.” She smiles. “Is my husband trying to pry into your life?”

“No. He was just telling me about how the people of Pine Cove will soon become very interested in my personal life.”

She laughs lightly. “That’s true, dear. I’m sorry to say.”

“I figured as much when I moved here. But Ally and Ash told me the friendly and kindness outweighs the gossip and nosiness.”

“Well, that’s nice to hear.”

Smiling, I walk into the employee breakroom and put my purse and jacket away.

“Who’s our first patient?” I ask Dr. Taylor.

“I’m doing a checkup with the Branson boy, and you’ve got a physical with the Emerson girl.”

“Sounds good.”

The day goes by relatively quickly as Dr. Taylor and I see patient after patient. It’s our busiest day yet.

I remember Ally telling me how when she first started seeing Jake, most of the town started filing into the café to check her out.

I really hope that’s not what’s happening here. I don’t know how anyone would know about Alex and I, but some of the patients today–mostly elderly ladies–came in claiming the same routine, generic symptoms that all turned out to be nothing but indigestion and heart burn. I’m trying not to believe that it was planned, but I don’t know, it seems too coincidental.

“Long day today,” Pam says to me as I’m gathering my things.

“Yes,” I sigh. “I’m exhausted.”

“Go home, have a glass of wine, and put your feet up. It’s only Monday.”

“Sounds like a good idea. Have a good night.” I wave, and walk off down the small hallway.
