“Whoa, okay, please stop.” I hold my hands up in defense.

“Mel, answer us.”

Smiling, I take another sip of coffee before telling them anything. “Well, he didn’t take me home Friday like we planned. I had Ash come back and get me. But then he came to the cottage after his shift and we talked, and he stayed with me. Then Saturday, we went for a ride on his Harley, and came back and, uh, you know.” I shrug, hiding my smile behind my cup.

“No, we don’t know,” Ally says, giving me her bitchiest look.

Laughing, I bring my braid around my shoulder and play with the end.

“You have to give ussomething, Mely. I know you keep things close to the vest, but we need to know.”

“Yes,” Courtney agrees, and I start to think of Alex and me on Saturday. Outside. On the grass. In the afternoon sun.

He took me. He claimed me.

“It was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. He was… is… just… amazing.” Looking over their heads at nothing in particular, flashes of it play in my head, and my body floods with heat.

“Oh. My. God.”

“Mel, you’re face looks all red and flushed,” Courtney adds, and my eyes flash to hers, a knowing smile on her face.

“What? Oh, yeah.” I smile sheepishly.

“I’m glad your new life here is starting off with a bang. Literally.”

“Ally,” Courtney says through a laugh.

“He’s taking me on a date tonight.”

“Really?” they say together.

“Yeah. He’s picking me up at six.”

“Do you like him, Mel? Like, really like him? Other than his sexy body? I don’t want you to get hurt. He’s not really a one-woman man. At least from what I’ve seen.”

“I like him. But I know his reputation. I know I shouldn’t expect too much from him, and I don’t fullytrusthim. But, still… He’s different than I thought he’d be. In a good way. He says I’m different from every other woman, and I want to believe him.”

“But you’re not sure yet,” Ally adds.

“Yeah, but I know he makesmefeel different than I ever have before. And that’s enough for now.”

“Just be careful,” Courtney tells me. “Alex has the ability to charm his way into, or out of, just about anything.”

“Oh, I know.” I smile. “Can I have a strawberry frosted donut, please?” I ask, changing the subject. I don’t want to talk about all the reasons why what I’m doing is a bad idea. I already debate it enough in my head.

“Yes. And fine, we won’t talk about it anymore,” Courtney says, reaching in the case for my donut. Placing it in a paper bag, she hands it to me.

“Thanks.”

“No problem. And it’s free today because you gave us a little juicy info to feed our souls.”

Laughing, I shake my head, and turn to leave.

“But we want to hear about your date tomorrow, too!” she yells after me, my hand on the doorknob. “You’ll get free coffee and pastries again!”

“I’ll think about it.” I smile, pulling the door open and leaving before they can say anything else.

Walking across the street to the office, I have a little extra spring in my step.
