“A woman should always be treated with a little romance. All the time,” he says, and I smile.

“I think so, too.”

Adjusting his hat again, we turn around and start walking back the way we came. “Can you bake me something?” he asks out of nowhere after a few seconds.

Laughing, I glance up at him. “Sure. What’s your favorite?”

“I eat everything.” He smirks. “Surprise me.”

“Alright, stop by the café this week, and I’ll have something for you.”

Smiling like he won the lottery, Tyler pats his flat stomach. “I’m looking forward to it.”

When we reach the pong tables, I rejoin my friends who are already loud and well on their way to drunk by the look, and sound, of it.

“Thanks for giving me extra time,” he says, letting go of my hand with reluctance, the warm air hitting my palm not nearly as satisfying as the warmth of his hand.

“I didn’t mind.” I smile, and he returns it with a boyish one of his own, those sexy dimples making an appearance.

“See you later maybe?” he asks, and I nod, watching him walk away and over to the table filled with his fellow firefighters.

“Have fun?” Ally nudges me, smiling.

“Yes. So, am I next?”

“Yup, you’re my partner,” she says. “But don’t think that you’re getting away with not telling us about your little romantic walk with Ty. You looked cozy – holding hands, smiling, gazing at each other.”

“Yeah, no,” I tell her, rolling my eyes. “We’ve decided to be friends. Nothing more.”

“Sure,” Courtney says sarcastically. “But if I walked with a guy friend like that, my husband would sure as hell think I’m cheating on him.”

“Whatever,” I sigh, not wanting to get into it right now. “And, Courtney?” I start, getting her attention. “I want to accept your offer. I can start this week. I’ve been itching to get back into a kitchen and play around. I haven’t been able to do it in a while.”

“Really?” she asks excitedly, and I nod. “Yay, I’m so happy!” She jumps up and down and hugs me. “Thank you!”

“You’re welcome!” I laugh. “But I think I should be the one to thankyou.”

“Want to come in on Tuesday? Or would you like a few more days off to relax and explore around?”

“No, Tuesday is great. I need something to stay occupied.”

“Perfect!” She claps. “Before anything, though, I’m going to kick yours and Ally’s asses in beer pong.”

“Not happening,” I scoff. “I frequented a lot of frat parties in college. I’m good.”

“We’ll see.” She laughs, rearranging the cups to start a new game.

Chapter 5

It took me all of yesterday to recover from Sunday’s barbeque. It went on for hours, only ending after nine when it was dark and the fireworks were set off. And by that time, everyone, including me, was a little past the point of drunk.

The Taylor’s know how to throw a party.

Today, though, is my first day at the café, and I haven’t been so excited for work in, well, ever.

Checking out of the Inn, I shove my suitcase into the backseat with all of my other stuff. Luckily, Mel is meeting me later to let me into Alex’s apartment and help me move in. I don’t like driving around with my car full like this.

It’s a beautiful, bright, sunny day today, and I roll the windows down as I make the short drive to Main Street. Parking a little ways away from the café, I enjoy the sun on my face as I walk.
