I welcome it, though. I love the fact that this is like I’m living in some small-town movie where the old ladies gossip and spread the news about the new, young, single girl in town, and how they think they know the perfect young gentleman for me. Their words, not mine. I wouldn’t make that up.

“Ready to go?” Ally asks me after we finish wiping down the tables.

“Yup. I’m meeting Mel now, and if you have a few minutes, maybe you want to help?” I ask, hopeful.

“Sure. Then we can grab dinner downstairs.”

“I’m definitely going to love having food so close,” I tell her. “And when we have another girl’s night, I’ll just have to walk around and up the stairs to crash.”

“That’s the plus side to living above a bar. The downside might be the noise, especially on the weekends.”

“I don’t think I’ll mind.” I shrug. “I’m just happy to have a place all my own. And it’s free. You can’t beat that.”

“True.”

Driving the short distance to The Rusty Anchor, I park in the back lot, and Ally, Mel, and I get my things unloaded in just a few trips.

“Thanks for helping me. I’ll get the first round of drinks.”

“Alex is working tonight, so drinks are free.”

“Sounds good to me,” I laugh lightly. “I’ll buy dinner then.” I lock the door, and we head down the steep steps.

“I seriously don’t miss these stairs,” Mel sighs.

“I don’t mind. It’ll keep my legs in shape.”

“Oh, yes, you have to keep them toned and tight to wrap around Ty’s hips,” Ally says slyly. “Or shoulders,” she adds.

The image of him naked, my legs wrapped around his waist, and him gazing down at me with those bright aqua eyes as he pushes into me, flashes through my mind, and I forget where I am for a second.

“That’s ridiculous,” I tell them, trying to cover up how flustered I am. “I told you we were just friends, and I told him I’m not looking for anything more right now.”

“We’ll see,” Ally says, taking her phone out to text someone.

“You better not be texting Jake to get some weird plan in motion.”

“Like Jake would help in that,” she scoffs. “He’d tell me to leave it alone and let you guys do what you want.”

“I think that sounds good,” Mel says.

“I’m texting Ashley to meet us when she’s done at work if you must know,” she says, ignoring us both.

“Good. I don’t want you guys pushing anything. Do I need to remind you what brought me here?”

“Exactly! You need another man to help you get over it. You know what they say – the best way to get over a man is to get under another.”

“Ashley said the same thing the other night,” I groan, rolling my eyes. “I’ll be fine without doing that, thank you very much. I just need some time to focus on this new chapter in my life.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever,” she says, waving her hand in the air. “That doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun.”

Ignoring her, we take the same table we did the other night, and Ashley meets us a few minutes later.

“Hey, guys.” She smiles. “How was your first day, Ellie?”

“It was really good. Courtney’s letting me stay later tomorrow to play around in the kitchen.”

“You’re making me my cupcakes, right?” Ally asks pointedly.
