Tyler opens his mouth to say something, but a teenaged boy comes over with our order. “Thanks.” I smile up at him, and he blushes and scurries away.

“He’s happy you’re here, too.” Tyler laughs, shaking his head. “Well, what are you waiting for? Take your first bite,” he urges.

This place doesn’t use what I would think of as a roll – hotdog or deli styled. It’s more of an extra-large piece of Texas toast folded in half to make a bun, and I have to use both hands to pick up the overstuffed lobster roll, taking as big of a bite as I can.

The freshly toasted bread, the tartness of lemon juice, melted butter, and the sweetness of the lobster meat – they all come together to form a heavenly combination in my mouth.

“Oh. My. God,” I mumble as I chew, closing my eyes to savor this first taste.

Tyler chuckles across from me. “I knew you’d love it.”

“Mhmm,” I hum, unabashedly eating my roll like the world was ending and I only had a few minutes to cram as much food in me as possible. “That was amazing,” I tell him when I’m finished.

“Like the sign says – best in Maine.”

“In five minutes, I’ll be ready for another.”

Smiling, he flashes me his sexy dimples, and I’m as blinded by them as I am the sun beating down on us. “As many as you can eat, sugar.”

Tyler and I both end up having another lobster roll, and we enjoy the beautiful, and still warm, September day. I know the weather is going to start changing soon, and fairly quickly, so I need to soak up as much warmth as I can while it lasts.

We ride back to his house in a comfortable silence, with only the radio playing between us as I stare out the window, enjoying the view. Tall pine trees line most of the side roads here, intermittent with what I think are oak and maple trees. They should be changing color in a few weeks, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it. I’ve never seen a New England Autumn.

“You’re good at making me forget my problems.” Without thinking, the words spill from my mouth. “Until this moment, I forgot the reason behind having this nice day off. Well, more than nice.” I smile, and he gives me a cocky one in return.

“Happy to be of service. I can make you forget anytime you’d like.”

“Can I take you up on that offer right now?”

When we reach the end of his driveway, his eyes grow dark, and his smile becomes less playful and more predatory. “Get that fine ass in my house.”

Scurrying out of his truck, Tyler is quick to meet me by my door and kisses me soundly before he all but drags me towards his house. But when I stumble over a loose rock, he steadies me, and then hoists me over his shoulder, carrying me inside fireman’s style.

Damn, he’s strong.

Chapter 13

“Did you enjoy your day off yesterday?” Courtney asks me when I walk into work.

I don’t even try to hide my smile. “I did.”

“I’m going to guess by that look on your face you were with Tyler the whole time?”

“I was.”

“How’s that going? Your whole, justfriends, thing? Still feel like you’re only that?”

“Yup.” I bend over and put my purse away so she can’t see my face.

The truth is, I don’t know anymore.

I think the line between friends and something more has gotten blurred and crossed more than once now. Especially yesterday.

I made sure not to spend the night again, despite his best efforts to persuade me to stay, and yet I still spent the rest of the night thinking about him anyway and wishing I was with him.

I laid awake for hours just trying to sort through what I was feeling, and I came to the conclusion that I’m positively, one hundred percent, screwed.

I like Tyler.
