“Well, Kyle and I broke up last night,” I tell them, taking a big gulp of my wine.

“Oh, no. What happened?” Mel asks.

“I walked in on him having sex with a girl we work with.”

“Oh my god. That fucker,” Ash practically growls.

“I spent last night at a hotel and went back for my stuff this morning after I knew he’d already left for work. Then I went to the restaurant and quit, which lead me to realizing I didn’t know what to do or where to go. I went to text you guys, but when I saw the picture you sent about your art show again, I just said ‘screw it’ and drove up here.”

“I’m glad you did,” Ally says, hugging me.

“Where are you staying?” Courtney asks.

“I have a room at The Pine Cove Inn for the weekend, but after that”–I shrug–“I don’t know.”

“Alex and I are at the cottage full-time, so his place is free if you want to stay a little longer here with us,” Mel offers.

“Oh, uh, I haven’t thought past this weekend yet.”

“You have nowhere to go, Ellie.”

“I know,” I say solemnly, swirling the wine in my glass.

“Then why don’t you stay longer than just the weekend? You just told us you have no home and no job,” Ashley so kindly points out.

“Please, Ellie?” Ally asks, practically bouncing with excitement.

“Yeah, please?” Mel adds.

“Yeah, please?” Courtney joins in.

Sighing, I can’t help but smile. “How am I supposed to say no to all of that?”

“You don’t,” Ash gloats.

“Would Alex be okay with me taking over his place?”

“Of course he will,” Mel assures me.

“Alright then…I guess I can stay until I figure everything out. I have everything I own in my car anyhow,” I say through a short laugh.

“That’s the spirit,” Ally says, raising her glass, and we all clink ours together.

“I’m sorry he turned out to be an asshole, but I’m not sorry you’re here, El,” Ash tells me.

“Same,” everyone else says together.

Laughing, I sip my wine. “Thanks. But I don’t want to talk about him anymore tonight. Please change the subject. How are your wedding plans going?”

“Which one of us?” Ash asks, smiling, pointing between her and Mel.

“Both of you.”

Mel got engaged to her man Alex in April, and Ashley got engaged to Ryan, another older brother of Tyler’s, over the winter during a snowstorm. It was pretty cute considering that’s how they were brought together the year before.

Now, all of my closest friends are in love, happy, and either engaged or married. Their men are loyal and head over heels in love with them. The sun rises and sets with them.

I want that.
