“What?” I ask. “He told you, you loved him?”

“Yup.” She smiles, a faraway, dreamy look in her eyes. “When we were fighting about something or other, he grabbed my face and kissed me like the world was ending. Then, he whispered against my lips that he knew I loved him, so that meant we were all good.” She laughs. “Then he said he loved me too, and that was the end of the fight.”

“Aww, Courtney. That’s so freaking sweet,” Mel says.

“I know.” She smiles. “Jack is my everything, and has been since I got here. He showed me what love really is. I came to Pine Cove for a fresh start, just like all of you. That’s why I took to Ally so quickly when she first came here, and I’m so glad I gave her a job.”

Ally sticks her tongue out at Courtney and blows her an air kiss. “Love you too, bitch,” she says, and we all laugh.

“Anyway, what I was saying,” Courtney continues, “is that Jack knew. And I know Tyler knows, too.”

“No,” I say somberly, looking down into my glass. “He can’t know. I may have showed him a little of it that last night I had with him, but…I left.”

“Men aren’t always so dumb, Ellie.”

“Aren’t they? He let me walk away. He didn’t even try to fight for whatever we had. And he saw me on a date with Caleb.”

“Okay, well, we should probably leave Caleb out of this,” Ash says, rolling her eyes. “But I would like to know why you thought you should go out with him in the first place. When did you even meet him for him to ask you out?”

“He came into the café last Thursday morning.”

“Guys, that doesn’t matter,” Mel interjects. “We’re here to help her get Ty back. You’re coming with us to his bonfire next Friday, and there you’ll be able to talk to him and he can’t walk away since it’s his house.”

“That’s it?”

“Do you need us to write you a fucking script?” Ash asks, giving me a look like I’m the dumbest person in the world. “Tell him you love him and you want him back, and then rip his clothes off. Simple.”

“To you that’s simple.”

“Just listen to us,” she says, standing to get us another round of drinks.

“Trust us, Ellie,” Ally says gently, holding my hand. “We’ve got you.”

I hope.

Chapter 19

Mel parks behind the long line of cars outside Tyler’s house, and I touch the ends of my new, shorter hair. I went to the salon yesterday and got four inches cut off and highlights to brighten my naturally honey blonde hair. I feel lighter. Fresher. New.

Stepping out into the night air, I inhale the fresh ocean breeze coming off the water.

My jeans and cream-colored sweater start to feel too tight against my skin and I pull at the rounded neckline. It’s gotten cooler over the past couple weeks, but it’s no match for the nerves currently racing through me.

This week has felt like the longest of my life. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw a pair of blue ones staring at me. Waiting for me. Wanting me to do something.

But I’ve done nothing but work and overthink.

I didn’t have any more run-ins with Tyler, and while a part of me has held on to the hope that he feels the way I do, I’ve started to have more doubts than hope in these last few days.

He hasn’t tried to talk to me.

He’s just kept his distance.

And while I’ve tried to come up with what I wanted to say to him to try and get him back, all that came to mind wasIloveyou.

I thought Ashley was joking with her advice, but maybe just telling him those three little words that hold the weight of my world will be enough.

From the moment he flashed those dimples at me, I was a goner. And the moment he let me into his heart, even the slightest, I was drowning in all things Tyler.
