When my eyes meet his again, I’m sure he can see every emotion passing through them, and I want him to.

My heart is pounding in my chest, and for ten of those, I hold his gaze, watching him watch me. A standoff of sorts.

But I look away first, and walk away quickly, making it halfway across the yard before Tyler grabs my arm to stop me.

“Wait. Ellie, wait.”

I spin around to face him. “No. I’m not waiting anymore. You can do whatever and whoever you want, Tyler. We’re not together, right?” I challenge, narrowing my eyes. He has the nerve to be with her with a yard full of people, andme?

“Why would you care if I did move on?” he counters, taking a step closer, his brows coming down over his eyes.

Looking around, I see that people are starting to notice us, and I pull my arm away, not wanting to put on a show for everyone. I walk towards the jam-packed driveway, and I can feel him following me.

“Where are you going, El? You plan on walking back to your apartment?”

“Maybe,” I throw over my shoulder, a few cars deep.

“Ellie, stop,” he says, and I freeze, spinning on my heel.

“You have a lot of nerve, Tyler.”

“I do?”

“Yes! You have a party going on, and you’re off screwing some girl upstairs.”

“I was?” He tilts his head slightly.

“Stop doing that!” I say through clenched teeth.

“Doing what?”

“That! Answering me with two-word questions! It’s annoying!”

“Why are you even here? If you don’t want to see me with another woman, maybe you should have just stayed home. Or gone on another date. Caleb still looked interested back there.”

“He’s not,” I assure him.

“Of course he is. I’m more than certain every man here would cut their arm off to be with you if they didn’t already know you were mine.”

“I’m not yours, Tyler,” I whisper, the fight leaving me in a single breath.

“Then why are you here?”

“I…I came to tell you something.”

“Yeah? What’s that?” he challenges, taking a step closer.

“Who is she? Why is she wearing your shirt?”

“Someone bumped into her and she spilled a drink on herself. I’ve known her my whole life. We’re friends, and I gave her a shirt to wear. I was being nice.”

“Well, don’t be,” I fire back, and he flashes me a predatory grin, stepping closer still. He’s only a foot away now.

“Jealous?”

I lift my chin. “No.”

“That look says otherwise. But why would you be jealous, Elizabeth?”
