It’s not a lie like every other time I’ve heard a man say it to me.

Sliding my hands up his shoulders and neck, I rest them on his firm jaw. His beard is back, and I love the way the roughness feels against my palm.

Another tear slips out of the corner of my eye, and I tilt my face up just the slightest so our lips are touching, but not kissing.

We rest here, breathing each other in, our lips sharing a secret only they know.

Him and I.

Us.

This.

“I need you to kiss me now, Tyler.” Every brush of my lips against his sends waves of electricity through me.

I feel him smile, and my fingers swirl the caverns of his dimples right before he kisses me fully.

My body melts on the spot, and his arms come around my waist, his hips pressing me against the truck, holding me up.

I thought I knew his kisses, but this one is different. This one is everything.

His lips mold to mine in a way that proves they were made for me. They were sculpted to perfection, just for kissing me.

My hands slide through his hair, and I grip the back of his neck, holding him to me for fear he’ll stop.

When his tongue slides against the seam of my lips, I moan, his hot tongue searing me and sliding against mine in a slow dance I never want to end.

Groaning, he presses me harder against the truck and I welcome his weight, the pressure in me rapidly building to the point where I know just the right touch from him will send me over the edge.

He tears his lips away. “God, I missed you,” he rasps, his voice thick with emotion. “These past few weeks have been…” he trails off, shaking his head slightly.

“I know,” I whisper. “Me too.”

Pulling back, he tucks my hair behind my ears with a slight smile. “I’m glad you came tonight.”

“I thought you let me walk away because you knew we weren’t anything more. But then I saw your eyes at the firehouse, and I knew.”

“What did you see?”

I inhale a shaky breath and give him a small smile. “I saw what I always saw. Only this time, I realized what it meant.”

“Is that so? But you still took another week to come to me?”

“Sorry. Blame the girls. They told me to wait it out so you’d miss me more.”

“I missed you five seconds after you left.”

“Me too.” Caressing his cheeks, I know there’s still one thing I have to explain. “I’m sorry I went out with Caleb, Tyler. I…”

“You don’t have to explain.”

“No, I do,” I insist, sliding my hands around his neck. “I wanted to know if what I was feeling for you was real or if it was just because you were the first man to treat me right after Kyle.”

“And what did you learn?”

“That I was an idiot to ever doubt what my heart already knew.”

“Is that so?” His smile is blinding, and I’m momentarily stunned by it.
