Chapter 22

2 months later…

Dancing around the kitchen to Darlene Love’s “Baby Please Come Home”, I’m in the middle of hitting a high note when I spot Tyler leaning against the doorframe.

“No spying, Tyler.” I place my hand on my hip and guard what I’m making on the counter with my body.

“I’m just enjoying the view, sugar.”

“And while I’d normally let you stare all you want, I’m trying to make you something special for your birthday.”

He flashes me a sexy grin. “Does it involve you and a bowl of whipped cream?”

“Tyler,” I chastise. “Don’t distract me with that option.”

“That’s all I need for a happy birthday, but I’ll let you get back to whatever secret project you’re working on.”

“Thank you. Now go.” I narrow my eyes, but he just smiles wider.

“Can I at least have a kiss goodbye?”

I shake my head. “Nope. Then you’ll see what’s behind me.”

“You sure? I know how much you love kissing me.”

“Oh, please,” I say, rolling my eyes. “Youlove kissingme. Now, get out of here. I’ll see you in a couple of hours, and then all will be revealed.”

“I hope you mean you’ll be naked?”

“You’ll never know if you don’t get out of here.”

“See you soon, sugar.” His words hold so many promises, and I grip the counter’s edge behind me to keep from ruining everything and just ripping my clothes off right now.

Nodding, he leaves me with a glimpse of dimples, and then he’s gone.

I let out a lungful of air and turn back to my creation in the making. I’ve never made a cake like this before, and I have to say, it’s freaking amazing.

These past couple of months have been the best of my life. I’ve never had more fun, and I’ve never wanted to make someone else so happy as I do Tyler.

I can’t wait to see the look on his face when I show him his cake. Tomorrow is his birthday, and Christmas is in a few weeks, and Tyler once told me that for his entire childhood, he had asked for a Dalmatian every birthday and Christmas. So, I thought I’d finally give him what he’s always wanted. As a cake, though.

I made him a 3-D cake of a grass patch with a red fire hydrant and a Dalmatian puppy sitting next to it. It came out a lot better than I thought it would, too, since I’ve never made something so elaborate before. I guess all the years of watching crazy cake shows turned out to be more helpful than I thought.

Getting back to work, I grab my modeling fondant and start in on the details of the Dalmatian. This isn’t some kid’s cartoon birthday cake. Nope. I’m making this puppy as realistic as possible.

“Honey, I’m home,” Tyler calls, swaggering into the kitchen with a cocky smile.

“Hi, handsome.”

“Is it okay to kiss you now?”

“Yes.” I smile, wrapping my arms around his neck as he crushes me against his solid frame.

“That’s the only answer I was going to accept anyway,” he says, capturing my lips with his in a searing kiss I feel all the way down to my toes.

Melting into him, I kiss him back with everything I have. Just as I always do.
