“Are you ready for your surprise?” I say against his lips, but he ignores me and kisses me deeper, shutting me up.

Tearing his lips away, he presses his forehead against mine. “Now I’m ready.”

“What?” I breathe, my brain fuzzy.

Chuckling, he pulls away, and I grip the counter for support. “I’m ready for my surprise, sugar. Or we could always just go upstairs?”

“What? No.” My brain finally catches back up with me and I step back, blinking out of the hazy daze he always puts me under when he’s near. “I know your birthday is tomorrow, but I wanted to give you some of your gifts tonight so we have all of tomorrow to do whatever you want before going to your parent’s.”

“So, you?” He smirks.

“Tyler.” I laugh. “Focus.”

“I am, sugar. You’re just not listening.”

“Anyway,” I emphasize, “here’s your first gift.” I reach for the box I covered his cake with, and lift it off, watching his face.

I really hope I he likes it.

“Ellie, baby.” His smile overtakes his face and he takes a step closer. “This is fucking amazing!” he says excitedly. “I can’t believe this! You made this?”

“I did.” I nod, nibbling my bottom lip and playing with the strings of my apron. “You told me you always wanted a Dalmatian, and so I thought this birthday you could finally have one. Well, the next best thing.” I shrug.

His eyes swing to mine, and they’re dancing with mirth. “You remembered.”

“Of course I did. I remember everything you tell me. I hope you don’t think it’s childish, or too–”

“I think it’s amazing. It looks so real.” Reaching out, he touches the dog’s head, smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. “And we can eat it?”

“Yes,” I say through a laugh. “It’s all edible.”

“Do I have to wait until tomorrow?”

“Not if you don’t want to. Your parents ordered a cake from the café for tomorrow, and I made this one just for you.”

“You’re the best.” Pulling me against his side, Tyler kisses my cheek. “Everyone at the station is going to be jealous their women can’t make them something so awesome. I have to take a picture.” Pulling out his phone, he snaps a few pictures.

“I’m sure Courtney could make Jack one.”

“Okay, so one other guy can have one made for him. I’m trying to compliment you, sugar.”

“Thank you.” I smile. “I have something else for you, too. You get another present tomorrow”–I wink–“but I want you to open your funny gifts now.” I hand him a box wrapped in Dalmatian paper.

“A theme?” He smiles, and I shrug, biting my lip. Ripping off the paper, Tyler lifts the lid on the box beneath and then looks up at me with a huge grin. “What’s this?”

“I don’t know, what is it?” I prompt.

Pulling out the contents, he holds up a red apron that says ‘Hot Stuff’ below an orange and yellow flame.

“I thought it suited you perfectly,” I tell him.

“It does, doesn’t it?” He puts it over his head and poses for me like a superhero.

“Now you can wear it when you cook for me,” I say cheekily. “And only that.”

Laughing, he slaps my ass. “It’ll make easy access for you when you need me, too.”

“You took the idea right from my head.”
