KAI

I flickmy flashlight on and search the room, just as the stairs groan under Grayson’s steps.

“What are you looking for?” he asks, his hand connected to the balustrade.

“A baseball bat.”

A questioning look slides over his face.

“Why is the baseball bat so important?”

“It’s missing. Or it’s misplaced. And it shouldn’t be.”

I crack a smile while he sets himself in motion and reaches the bottom of the stairs.

“She uses it to protect herself. When that happens, people usually keep it in a certain place. And it’s always the same place because they want it handy. In her case, it was behind the door, which makes sense. This way, she can grab if someone enters her house through the back door or someone is on the porch. Someone posing a danger to her, I mean.”

“Who is this girl again?” he asks, amused.

He knows who she is.

It’s just that he’s never met her.

“I’ll introduce her to you one day.”

I push the couch to the side when a sound of rolling wood comes from under the furniture.

“And there it is,” I say, extracting it. “Do you think you can have your men dust it for prints?”

“I sure can. Do you think whoever had touched it left any prints?”

He’s right.

“Forget about it.”

“That’s what I thought.”

I leave it next to the couch as if it's always been there, and Giana couldn’t see it.

“My theory is that whoever knocked it over didn’t bother or didn’t have time to put it back. I doubt they touched it,” I say.

He stops in the middle of the room, his hands on his hips.

“Who are we talking about here?”

I suck in a long breath and sigh, pondering.

“You won’t believe this, but I think a third party just got involved in this story.”

“What are you talking about?” he asks, puzzled.

“You said your people had surveilled the street?”

“Uh-huh.”

“And they had seen nothing suspicious?”
