Page 5 of When We Lose

He let me loose.

And now he wants me back.

My eyes get misty, yet I blink it all back.

He wants me back because he knew… He always knew I would come back.

Ignoring my restraints, I twist my arms above my head and roll onto my side so I can face him.

He doesn’t untie me, only looks at me, searching my eyes, with small tears barely clinging to my lashes.

“When you cried…” he said, no longer stroking me and wiping a stray tear away from my face. “When you cried for the first time… It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” he says quietly, and my heart is about to bust with emotions.

He smoothly unties my restraints, and my arms fall around his neck while my eyes don’t leave his.

When he peers at me again, he has his grip wrapped around my neck and his thumb pressed into my skin, the candlelight flickering in his eyes.

“If I could do something to see those tears more often, I would…” he says quietly, his voice vibrating against my chest, my lips, and face, entering my brain. “Your tears were my ending,” he adds softly while I don’t dare to breathe.

A lump lodges in my throat while my lips are stitched together. I can’t push a thought out.

Because I know what his words mean.

Coming back to him…

He’s summoned that woman again.

The one who couldn’t push back her emotions on the terrace that first night we spent here and put out her fire with her tears.

And she comes back to him again… Because she’s never been far from us, it seems.

I almost feel my tears again when I press my lips against his lips and he pulls me into his chest.
