It’s not my fault that I have high standards. I was born that way. There’s no point in trying to change myself eighteen years down the line. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

Ava is shaking her head, smiling to herself, when our phones ding. We both reach for them, but it’s me that breaks the silence with a snorted laugh.

“This should be good,” I say, unlocking the screen. Adam’s message opens in our group chat.

Adam: This one is for you Gray. Enjoy xoxoxoxo

“Oh, my God,” Ava gasps.

There’s a video beneath the message with a photo of a zip-line, and I turn the volume up on my phone before pressing Play.

I raise a hand to my mouth and choke on a laugh when I see Tyler hanging from the zipline, flailing around like a baby bird trying to fly. He’s shouting something, but the recording doesn’t pick up what. My brother’s laughter is loud in my phone’s speakers.

“Is that Tyler?” Ava asks.

“That’s Tyler,” I confirm. I would recognize him anywhere.

The recording shakes, like Adam lost his balance or something, before Tyler’s flipping him the bird and Adam’s hand appears in the video. Oh boy, he’s waving at him.

The video ends shortly after that, and with a stupid grin on my face, I type a message for the chat.

Me: You’ll pay 4 that l8er Adam. But know I loved it. Thank u

Adam: You’re welcome. They’re bringing him down right now

Big bro <3: His punishment will come soon I’m sure. You girls better fill a tub with ice. Adam will need it tonight.

Ava: No he won’t. You won’t let anything happen.

Ava: Right?

Big bro <3: Scouts honour

Big bro <3: Now tell me you wore underwear for your massage

I sputter a laugh, turning to Ava. “He knew we were getting massages?”

She shakes her head rapidly. “No!” Realization dawns on her. “Adam. That sneaky shit.”

Ava: ADAM! *Angry face emoji*

Adam: … he tortured it out of me.

Big bro <3: Liar. He gave up the information without a single threat. Might want to reconsider his best friend status, babe.

Adam: If you want me to yourself Lee, just say that. There’s no need to play games

Me: Awe, when’s the wedding?

Tyler: NEVER. They’re both dead.

Me: Leave them alone. Ur lucky I wasn’t there. I would have made sure they kept u up on that line until tomorrow morning

Tyler: And I would have found a way to tie you up there with me. Maybe upside down

Adam: Children, come on. There’s no need for violence

Ava: Oakley? Did he get you?

Big bro <3: No. But we’re getting ready to head back now. Talk soon. I love you both

Me: Leave Tyler there. Love u big bro

Ava: See you soon. *kissy face emoji* *red heart emoji*

“Some days they drive me crazy, and other days I can’t believe I got so lucky,” Ava sighs, tucking her phone away.

I put mine away and nod. There’s a heavy feeling of hurt still in my chest after everything that has happened with Tyler over the past five days, but right now, it dims the slightest bit. “Yeah. Me either.”
