“Okay,” she breathes out.

“Hey.” I reach for her hand.

When my skin touches hers, our eyes lock. I shake out of it and continue speaking. “I’d never interfere in your life without your permission. I’m glad she heard about it and hired you for the job.” I squeeze her hand before releasing it.

“Thanks. It’s so great. I feel like I’m doing something with this brain.” She taps her temple.

“You’re doing a lot more than just that, Sage. You’re smart and kind.”

“Thanks.” She presses her lips into an awkward smile.

“Anytime.”

“I’m gonna get back to work.” She throws her thumb over her shoulder.

“Okay.”

I get on my laptop and scroll through the internet. I can’t really focus on anything. My head’s a mess. If I go for something with Sage, then I need to reevaluate my professional life. It wouldn’t be fair to her to have a part-time boyfriend.

I wish we could have had the chance to truly date and see where things could go. No pretenses. Had I met her under different circumstances, I have no doubt what I would want. Though what Hudson said is true.

I have this fairytale idea that I’m going to announce Spread Joy and instantly go off all over the world. Deep down, I know it doesn’t work that way, no matter how in denial I am.

I pull up my email and type a message out to my last boss. He knows why I stopped volunteering. It was never a secret that I wanted to eventually open my own organization, and they were supportive.

I have a few questions I hope he’ll help with, including this current situation and timelines. I reach for my cup as I finish the email and find it empty. Nothing is more disappointing than thinking you’re going to take a hearty drink of coffee and then coming up empty-handed. I send the email and stand, stretching my arms.

Sage looks over at me. Her eyebrows wrinkle as her eyes take me in.

“Are you leaving?” I can’t deny how good it feels to notice she’s disappointed.

“Nope, just stretching and going to order another coffee.” I wink, which results in an eye roll.

I chuckle and move over to pay for my coffee. Julie is somewhere in the kitchen, so Sage comes over to the register.

“Black like always?” She smirks.

“Yes, black like always.“ My tone is teasing.

She laughs and taps the screen while I grab my wallet.

“Although, you did order a cappuccino once.”

“You see, I’m not that predictable. By the way, I wanted to square away some details for the wedding.”

“Of course,” she nods, handing me change.

I drop it in the tip jar and move back to my seat.

“The church is in town, right?” She asks as she serves my coffee.

“Yeah, and the reception venue is about forty minutes from here.” My hand wraps around the hot cup.

“Oh, I thought it was closer.” She frowns.

“Is that a problem?” I tilt my head.

“No.”
