I can’t convey this to the guys at the moment, but shit, this is my fault. Or not really myfaultexactly, but, I must’ve tripped an alarm at some point. But I was breaking in with them right as Donovan was entering with the Immortal Key, so the building then registered that as a legitimate entrance, and since they were so close together, it must’ve confused the magic. Hence, the delay in the alarm going off as the magic finally sorted itself out.

Donovan looks around, confused, probably wondering if we somehow gave him a broken or defective key, or maybe even a forgery.

But then his red eyes land on me, and they go wide.

I grit my teeth and launch myself at him.

The magical defenses are going to go up any second now and try to trap us in here. We have to get Donovan and evade the traps if we’re going to get out of here and succeed.

All four of us lunge for Donovan at once as he tries to dodge, but North and Raven coming up from behind him throws him off and they end up in a tangle.

“We’ll deal with him!” Cain yells to me. “Get us out of here!”

Right, okay. They’re the fighting experts. I’m the burglar. I’ve never set off magical alarms of this magnitude before, but the principles of trapping burglars are all the same. I can do this. I think.

I pull out my pocket jamming device and turn it on. I try not to use this unless the alarm’s already gone off, because if I jam it, that’ll alert anyone who’s on guard. But it’s too late for subtlety now.

Donovan and the other three are fighting furiously, rolling around to the point where I’m worried they’ll slam into one of the podiums and set off more alarms or even activate one of the artifacts. The last thing we need around here is rogue magic.

I fiddle with the jammer until I get the signal right, and the magic around us goes haywire. The alarm stops blaring, but it fizzes and pops all around us. Lasers go in and out of power like a light grid in front of us, and I know that if we’re going to do this right, I need to control the jamming enough to get us through without hitting those lasers. Who knows what other booby traps might be in store for us if we set something else off?

“Come on!” Cain yells in frustration.

Donovan snarls, his fangs out, all semblance of sophistication thrown away as he gives into his vampiric nature completely. I’m terrified that he’ll tear into one of the men and rip them apart with his teeth, but all of them seem to be smart about avoiding those teeth and knowing how to fight him without getting their blood sucked. It’s something most fae could stand to learn better about when it comes to combat.

I get the jamming right, but only for a second. “We have to go! Now!”

Raven growls and manages to grab the back of Donovan’s head—and smashes Donovan’s face into the ground.

I wince. Ouch. I’m not a fan of Donovan’s, obviously. But damn, that must hurt.

Donovan finally slumps to the floor, unconscious.

“Okay, let’s go!” I yell.

Raven hoists the unconscious vampire onto his shoulder and we sprint for the exit. I can hear the defenses fizzling back to life even as we slip back through the door we entered in. Shit, that was too close for comfort.

“We can’t create a portal on the building!” Cain yells.

“I’m aware!” North yells back.

Our original plan was to try to sneak downstairs and exit out the ground floor, but that’s shot all to hell now. “We need to get up onto the roof!”

The men follow me as we race up to the roof.

“Cain, we need a portal!”

“I can’t do it on top of the building,” Cain replies. “It’ll have to be in the air off the building. We’ll have to jump.”

Shit. “Do it.” We don’t have any other choice.

Time to jump!

CHAPTER17

The portal opens up in front of us, about two feet out from the edge of the building. Shit. That makes sense. I know that Cain is making the portal as close as he possibly can, but it’s still going to be a bit of a jump.

I can’t help but look down as we run up. Shit, that’s a high drop.
