Ugh, why wasn’t I better about getting rid of the alarms? This was my job. This is my profession—it’s what I’ve been doing for years. And I couldn’t handle it?

There’s no time to beat myself up. Raven’s got the still-unconscious Donovan slung over his shoulder, and he takes a flying leap off the building, wings spreading so that he dives through the portal.

North makes the leap no problem, always working hard to make himself the best that he can possibly be, pushing himself to the limit and beyond.

Now it’s Cain and me.

Cain grabs my hand. “Let’s go, Kiara!”

There it is again, that reassurance that I’ll never be alone. That I’m always going to have at least one of these men at my back.

I hold on to Cain’s hand tightly and rush with him across the roof, toward the portal. I take a flying leap right at the edge, Cain right next to me, and I push myself off.

Right as I’m falling through the portal, I feel someone grab onto the front of my shirt and yank me through, as if even though I was probably going to make it, this person really wants to make sure that I get through.

I land with a hard thump against North’s chest. He’s obviously the one who grabbed me and yanked me through.

North sets me to rights as Cain closes the portal. Raven’s putting Donovan in a chair and tying him up. The vampire’s still unconscious for now, but I doubt that’ll last long. Vampires heal really quickly, and they’re strong.

“Put him in the panic room,” North orders.

Raven and Cain carry Donovan into the panic room, where Cain then checks Donovan over for tracking devices or anything that could ping his location to his bodyguards. “We should check and make sure we didn’t leave a trace behind at the Shard, either,” he says.

“We shouldn’t have,” I reply. But then again, I thought that I had a good handle on breaking into the Shard too, and look at how that turned out. “I’m good at not leaving a trace, but… maybe we should check it again, just in case. Do some magic or something.”

“I’ll double check,” Cain says, “but I’m sure that you did a great job.”

He exits the room and North walks up to Donovan.

I didn’t expect North to backhand Donovan against the face, but hey, I’m not complaining. The asshole had it coming to him.

Donovan blinks, his eyes blurry for a moment, and his head lolls to the side. Then he blinks a few times and focuses in, and seems to realize who we all are.

He glares, his eyes flaring red. “You little pieces of shit! What are you doing!”

“I think that should be obvious,” North replies, his teeth baring in a growl. If I didn’t know better, I’d say North’s fangs were about to pop out.

“What are you doingout?” Donovan snarls. “You shouldn’t even be here! You should be under Roanac’s control!”

“Actually we should be dead,” I note dryly. “But anyway…”

“Are you kidding me? What are you doing here?” I’ve never heard Donovan sound so damn confused and upset. It’s exhilarating. I love it. Can we piss him off like this all the time? Give him a taste of his own damn medicine?

“We escaped,” I reply. “I think that should be obvious.”

Donovan get even paler than usual and that’s saying something for a vampire. “Roanac is going to kill me if he finds out that I was with you.”

“As our prisoner,” North points out dryly.

“Even as your prisoner!” Donovan replies. Oh ho ho, he’s scared. This is great.

I don’t think I’m a vicious person, in general. But after all that vampires have done to my family, and after all that this vampire has specifically done to me, I can’t help but feel glad that he’s sweating a little.

“Roanac will blame me for your escape! He’ll kill me and my entire organization! You can’t do this!”

I fold my arms. “You can stop the fucking pity act. Even if Roanac does blame you, how is that on me and my guys, huh? You sold us to your master. You’re an evil bastard and you deserve whatever’s coming to you. You get that?”

Donovan glares at me. I glare right back. I’m not scared of him. I have all the power now, it’s reversed, and he’s not in control anymore. Not so big and bad without his henchmen around, huh?
