Chapter Six

A dream itself is but ashadow.

—Shakespeare,Hamlet

Nicholas stared atCatherine. He’d never seen anything so splendid. His staff ached, and he squeezed it tightly, trying to distract it. He didn’t want to spend quickly like a schoolboy. He wanted to revel in each moment, wanted to savor every inch of this woman who gazed at him with such love.

Except she was not gazing at him lovingly now. Instead, she was fixated on a certain part of him. He pulled at his cock one last time, fighting a satisfied smirk as her eyes grew rounder. She was intimidated. Nervous. He wanted to crow, so exultant was he at her naivete. It wasn’t that he didn’t have faith in her, but four years was an unbearably long time. And she was always a spirited girl. Correction. Woman. She was all woman now.

He tugged at the laces of her riding boot, and her gaze shifted to his as he slowly pulled off the shoe, keeping eye contact as he removed the second one. He hoped she could see that her love was returned tenfold. That he, too, had waited. There’d been no one since their year together. Her twenty-first summer.

“Share your thoughts?” she whispered, her vulnerability a sweet balm to his soul. Innocence had not caressed his days of late. His throat tightened with longing for lost years, so he merely smiled, saying nothing.

Silk stockings drew a delicate line of temptation, and his hand willingly followed it. And she’d worn a sheer chemise. Not so innocent in intent. That pleased him, and the last drop of doubt trickled away. She truly wanted this. He unhooked a garter, lazily unrolled it, and then repeated the procedure with her left one. Throwing it to the ground, he moved lower, tasting her calf, her knee, her thigh.

“Nicholas?” Her voice was louder, almost strident.

He pressed a kiss to her soft flesh and glanced up. She was uneasy. And excited. A filly ready for a confident hand. “Come, Cat. You have felt me beneath your hands as I have you.” He stroked her gently, approaching her core with each successive swipe.

“Yes, but…but I have never seen you.”

She squirmed as his thumb found what it was seeking.

“Oh!” Flushed a delicious pink, she tried to wriggle away, but his weight held her fast. “And…”

She began to pant, short breathy little sighs, so he increased the pressure, the speed. “And?” he teased.

“…you have never seen me!”

“Nor have I tasted you.”

She gasped as he replaced his thumb with his mouth. If she made any further sound, he did not hear it. The rushing of his blood filled his ears and blocked all noise as he inhaled deeply. Pure heaven. His thumb resumed its dance as he relished each inch of her. When release vibrated through her body, it echoed in his—as sweet for him as he hoped it was for her.

He rested his head against her thigh for a moment before kissing his way back up her body. Rising on his elbows, he studied her. Eyes closed, her furrowed brow was softened by the hint of a smile. He kissed her lightly, and she looked at him, her eyes a virtual forest of variegated green. Woods he could get lost in. Was lost in. Would remain lost in forever.

“Oh,” she sighed, her hands caressing his face. “That was…”

“That was just the beginning,” he said, pressing his forehead to hers and moving his hips. She stiffened. Perhaps he was asking too much? Expecting too much, too soon?

He pulled back. “We do not need to—”

She put her finger to his mouth. “Yes, we do.”

Still, he hesitated. But she wrapped her legs around his thighs, snugging him in place. He nudged, and she smiled in timid encouragement. Settling back on his elbows, he abandoned all chivalrous considerations and prodded for admittance, not able to resist looking down to see their bodies melding. She inhaled sharply, so he withdrew abruptly, glancing up, expecting distress again.

Instead, she shook her head, still smiling. “It’s new to me. That’s all.”

He advanced again, this time meeting her barrier. He’d never been with a virgin, but there was no doubt he had reached her maidenhead. It was unlike anything he’d ever felt. He faltered, not wanting to cause her pain.

“I’m not fragile. I won’t break.” She seemed unsure even as she egged him on.

He kissed her noble nose. “That’s my girl.” His Cat did not shy away from a challenge. Thank God, for he did not wish to stop.

She lifted her hips, providing encouragement and easier access. He pulled out, then reentered with full strength. Her barricade gave way, and she whimpered as he nested himself fully. Her breath rasped in his ears. He worried he was crushing her, but he found himself unable to lift his own weight. He could easily spend right now. But he’d waited too long to let go with such readiness. He wanted to bask in this union as he had luxuriated in tasting her body.

She wriggled beneath him, and his rod twitched in response. He chuckled against her neck. Their bodies were as in accord as their hearts. Rising onto an elbow, he traced her lips with his thumb. Lips that tilted in a devious smirk.

“I would have it all, Nicholas,” she dared with the impertinence he so adored.
